The deep freeze loosened her grip, we headed to town with a camera.

Forrest,

I gotta say.... I don't ever find myself wanting to get back into flying longwings, (besides merlins) but if I lived out there, you can bet your butt I'd be begging Brian Sullivan (or somebody) for a 50/50!

It is tempting. I do own a house in Rapid.:D Out side of town 30 mins and you can find your own 160 for a pretty good price. Grasses and stubble as far as the eye can see.

No warm up here, more snow and wind over the weekend and possible sub zeros for highs next week. Did have some good hawking days this week.

Thanks Forrest,
Though Rikka is taking pheasant regularly now. I don't think she's up to grouse yet, needs to tighten up overhead, now she covers a lot of sky. I am having a good time with her here though.

Evidently, it really did used to be called "duck" tape:

One view [16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duct_tape#cite_note-15) is that it was called "duck tape" by WWII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II) soldiers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier) either because it resembled strips of cotton duck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton_duck) or because the waterproof quality of the tape contributed to the name, by analogy to the water-shedding quality of a duck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck)'s plumage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plumage).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duct_tape#Etymology

That was news to me when I stumbled across it a recent while back.

South Dakota is gorgeous. We drove up there last March and spent 4 days in the nearly deserted Custer State Park. Due south of there, coming out of Hot Springs to N NE easily ranks in the Top 5 of My Favorite Topography.

Great pics Forrest, I spent several summer on my uncles farm near Stephens. I can vividly remember riding out on his tractor to cut hay and seeing huge, HUGE, flocks of pheasants and untold numbers of jackrabbits. This was in the 50's and game was amazing...

Me, my claim to fame while on his farm. was to singlehandedly , along with my brother, scare his two thousand plus laying hens (he was also an egg producer) so badly they quit laying for a day.... seems they didn't like us throwing 'black cat' firecrackers at the swallows in the hen house...whipping no.1
whipping no. 2 chasing the huge gold fish that were in the stock tank... seems his pull horses only liked clean water to drink... picky ..picky..picky...

Say Barry sounds like a good time. I searched long and hard for a place like this, I started in Texas and lived in Utah, New Mexico, Nebraska and here. I knew this was the place, so many ecosystems are dead, I came here in the summer and saw bugs and birds and turtles crossing the road, young grouse chasing grasshoppers, ducks in every pond. But then came winter OMG. There are sacrifices to be made. South Dakota is not a rich state, does not pay well. But then it does not cost a lot to live here. Plenty of land to enjoy hawking on.

Hey Forrest,
No need to be rescued man... I'm just teasing you. I run a tight ship when it comes to spelling, grammar, syntax, etc.. And sadly, I'm often the one who needs editing. It's like a "do as I say, not as I do" situation. Kind of like my hawking; I spend plenty of time telling folks, "Hey, just enjoy the flying your bird, and strive for a fit hawk that flies with style. Don't stress about head-scores" and then I'm out there every day trying desperately to run my head-score into the heavens. Hey, we all have our flaws. Happy hawking out there man.... You're now on my official radar for "retirement destinations." Lots of game and not many other falconers is where I want to be! :D

Dakota
01-17-2011, 08:07 PM
No problem Scott, you'll have a field day with me I never did know how to spell. My nearest falconer is an hour and a half away, would not matter if he lived next door, plenty of land and game, never would see each other. Check it out, when you go to retire I'll be in my grave!

mainefalconer

Yeah, take it easy man. It's not a race to the grave. Besides that, I'm planning an early retirement, so if you've got another 15 to 20 years in your spirit, I can swing by, pick you up, and push your wheelchair into position so that you can sit back and enjoy the mind-numbingly outrageous stoops of our falcons! :D And who knows.... maybe I'll beat you into that wheelchair. Life is a funny thing.

My camera is acrually being held together with duck tape!

If it makes you feel any better for the longest time I thought when you sneezed people said "Blush you".. so I said that forever & I always wondered why people looked at me weird. Then one day I was watching a movie and they said "Bless you".. my whole life was literally turned upside down. I was living a lie for so long:(

Alright Chris, thanks! My pigions have not left the coop in three weeks, heated water pan, food and a skylight beats bitter wind I guess.
