(welc)Renee: Tell us about yourself? How old are you? Why do you want to become an falconer? There is a great deal of information on this site you should read before you start asking to many questions. It sounds like things are not in your favor at this time with the family problems. Please go to the CP unit in the upper left hand corner to have you signature auto added to your post. This is one of the few rule that the forum works under.

Hi Renee,

Your list above contains a lot of substantial hurdles to becoming a falconer. I would suggest you get in touch with the Alabama state club. (As someone mentioned above.) Also the national organization (www.n-a-f-a.com (http://www.n-a-f-a.com)). As for reading, yes, buy some good books and start reading.

Seems like from the start to actually getting that first bird takes around 1-2 years. If you go hawking with local falconers and have fun watching and beating brush with them you'll be getting a good head start. Once you get a good vehicle and start your studying, building hawk gear and learning then you can really get started. Also, by then, you'll be another year or two older and more in control of your own destiny, so to speak. Being dependent on a single parent for driving you to hawking fields isn't going to be easy. Best bide your time working with local falconers until the time is better for you. I beat brush for FIVE years until the time was right for me to get my own bird.

Keep asking questions. Lots of people here are ready willing and able to keep you going in a good direction.

My advice is this: don't look at the hurdles, look at the opportunities in front of you. Find some falconers on this forum, hang out with them and go hawking. Best of luck!

clappclapp Carlos is right. a while back I realized that if I waited for all the stars to align before I got back into falconry I would be waiting forever...Now I fly for a living and love it.

oh, yeah. I almost forgot (welc)(welc)

ya, it is.

However, depending on his dad's sensitivity it may not be a complete deal breaker. I know several falconers who never, and I mean never bring their hawks into the house because their spouse has put their foot down about it. They manage just fine.

You know about Nafex, here are some other sites.

Great info here, Don't get scared by the training information, this woman is like the bird whisperer or something. I have not gone even close to how she trains her bird, but will.

Renee,
i'm not sure if you are still interested, but i got many of the books listed on "the modern apprentice" website from a local library. inter-library loan is great. books came from all over the country.
just make sure to ask for one at a time. i got ten all in one week. and they kept coming in. reading them was a rush.
the website, the modern apprentice has plenty to keep you busy for a while.

One more vote for reading everything on the Modern Apprentice website. The advice on reading lists and making contact with the state falconer's association is excellent. You have some hurdles ahead of you but falconry is never easy and takes a lot of work to do correctly. It's a lifetime learning experience and you never graduate.

Best wishes to you as you consider all of this and work through your situation. If you meet the right falconer, maybe you could introduce your dad to them.
