Katy, we have many up here in the border country, i will say though, that as hunting terriers they are not as good as lakeland terriers or patterdale terriers, all of which originated from here my home county...If your serious , get in touch, i could easily source you one and send him airmail....colin

Heres the lakedistrict i hunt in, hard work up here on the legs and lungs, but hey, worth every step. col

the dogs working hard, pointers (english) in reality are the only dogs that can cope with the effort needed up here.

Beautiful but I can appreciate & respect the effort required to hunt there. You basically have 3 options...stay home, get in shape, or die on the hill.

I've seen some pretty nice terriers of mixed origen work with Foxhounds in Ireland but nothing consistent. I had a few Borders in the late 90s who were supurb hunters--all of 'vintage' UK pedigree. I wouldn't touch a modern American one today, and have always thought to take a trip to visit your neck of the woods to see if there are any working Borders to consider... I have never cared for the Lakelands here and have no experience with the Patterdales. I expect that you have working Lakelands (brain and braun)...I know a few breeders over here and they all breed for the bench, no brain. I would love to know more about Patterdales and your Lakelands as well. I have even considered another Irish (Red) Terrier but they are a bit leggier and harder to get down a small hole after a rabbit.

Katy, over here Borders are probably the poorest of the hunting terriers, although thats not to say they cant work, however they are very much a pedigree dog, and unfortunately anything pedigree ends up bred for the show ring, this is the sad fate of many borders. Lakelands, patterdales, and in generall what we call "fell terriers" (a blend of and including both) are far less used by the show fraternity, and are very much work focused. Patterdales are very hardy terriers, smaller than borders , tending to be less stocky with a similar size head and almost always black. We do have other less common lines of terrier also, generally though borders would not be anyones first choice as a real working animal. atb Col
