Thanks Gary, very nice Hawk!

What is the origin of your Red Tail? Is this one of those imported into Alaska from Oregon or Texas?

Jeff !

I went to Texas about 5 years ago and took this bird.

I have about stopped looking for a passage gyr up here, they are so scattered, I have not seen one since about 2 months ago. I had a female come in to my pigeon but did not take it.

I will probably aim at taking an eyas gyrkin this coming season I hope , who knows that far out.

Thats cool .

You have to locate a pocket of hares , this place is done with their cycle, its 2 1/2 hours from the nice house, so it becomes an all day ordeal and I couldn't do it every day of course.

good hawkin

Hey Gary,

Nice pictures, thank you for sharing. I always wondered, when you guys up north are out hawking do you ever worry about bears or other large predators? have you ever had any problems with them?

Hey Chris,

Beings I am not as brave as some, yes , I think about bears for sure. Living in Nome and seeing lots of grizzly and knowing where they stay, in the willows, is a real concern for me.

We are in Fairbanks now and I have not seen one bear here in 6 years. I saw on average of about 15 grizzly a year in Nome.

I was hunting my first gyrkin on a lonely gravel road, I was hunting my GWP Chip and working the short willow for Ptarmigan then picking him up when we got to the bad stuff over your head to 10 feet high, when I allowed him to run thru a big willow patch, he sorta hit high gear when he entered and all of a sudden on the back side out comes a huge grizzly and Chip about 3 ft from his butt !!! The nice Tri-Tronics worked on # 6 and we resumed hunting while the nice grizz went his way.

Moose gut piles are very serious places to find a bear or if you walk in on him a bear may find you.

Jon,

The hares are on their low cycle in the areas that are close to me and besides that fumes from a long trip killed my gos and RT.frus)

I caught those hares about 4 years ago.

Thanks Gary!

Trouble and UNDUE pressure has curtailed much of my posting here on NAFEX. A couple of seasons back I posted an account of hawking Sagegrouse with photos of a Kill in March. Since that time I have caught grief from 2 state falconry club Presidents and a BLM official(all 3 are NAFEX members), even though the season was open and there were no laws broken. One of the presidents has 'suggested' that I quit my posts and I must admit that I am feeling the pressure. In addition I am fed up with Photobucket and trying to get things posted through them on NAFEX. To add insult to injury, those whom donate, are exempt from needing to use an outside service. My personal opinion is that I have contributed plenty to this site, and I should not be restricted on posting pictures. I can't help but remember that this site is private property and what is donated is also private and if the owner chooses, at any point to make it so. All that I have posted is a donation to Mr. Lynn.

That said, my season has started with a bang! I am flying 3 birds. The ducks are 'in'. Lox has caught a few and my daughter took a few very nice pictures, that all could see if it were easier to post them. Send me your email address and I will send pics and perhaps a few stories to you and those interested.

All the best!

I just wish you could post a scratch and sniff :D I'm originally from Colorado...oh ya...gotta be a full on sensory experience hunting up there! Loving that icy beard! I worked up in Gillette, Wyoming in the mid 70's when they struck oil. Slept in the truck camper shell awhile and coming from the showers to the truck my long hair would be frozen stiff! Miss that kind of cold. Made an ice fisherman outta me tho!

YOU are one tough lady for sure !!!

I have when younger been out chopping firewood or doing some work in 40 below and have icicles hanging off me mustache , smiles. What you don't do is reach up and break one off, AAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!! OR pull the ice off which is thick or allow someone else to do that , smiles

Thanks Ryan,

It would be great to find a gyrkin, but it may have to wait as I have not seen anything since September.

I aim to trap a goshawk after the new year and that will be a hoot for sure, smiles.

I definitely have plans to hunt ptarmigan off of snowmachines (snowmobiles) That was da bomb in Nome !

Man that is some beautiful scenery. I would get lost watching the scenery and soaking it in. 5 above zero sounds about right for hawking. I went out one time -20f without factoring in the wind. My redtail did just fine. I on the other hand lasted 20 minutes.

Thang about this nice country is the size of it, its just so huge will little to no road systems.

I have to go find the hares, right now they are about 11 hours away.

IF you fly a falcon high like the lower 48 guys you lose it , because you have no way to follow it if it rakes away.

Its awesome to say the least but its a very harsh falconry climate.

The coldest I have hawked in is about 20 below and it was not easy. I would much rather it be about 15 degrees, but thats just me,

best,

Gary
