Just got this e-mail from Eric Edwards about the apprentice workshop. I went to it last year and had a blast...all the aspiring falconers that can make it should be there.

Attention all Florida Falconers

The Florida Falconers' Association will be hosting our second annual Apprentice & Trapping Workshop this month. All Florida Falconers are welcome to attend this event and I strongly encourage anyone with apprentices to encourage them to come. There will be a wealth of information available to them. This is also the first day of trapping season so it's a great opportunity to come to the workshop, tune up those old BC's, or build a new one, get all your equipment ready and pick up a new Red Tail on the way home.

By next year I hope we will be able to trap passage peregrines and I'll have several peregrine traps on display. Including the most common bow net set for peregrines.

We will also be discussing any falconry issues you may have. And with the upcoming peregrine meeting in Gainesville, this will be a great opportunity to discuss any concerns in regards to the peregrine management plan.

See photos from last year's event on the FFA website HERE (http://www.floridafalconry.com/).

Sunday, Sept 21st from 10:00am until...

Please RSVP to me ASAP so I know how many plan to attend.

Location: We will use the same great location for the workshop. Just south of Melbourne on A1A is the Juan Ponce de León Landing Park, at 4005 Highway A1A, Melbourne Beach. (More info here http://brevardparks.com/parks/prksa3.php#otherparks (http://brevardparks.com/parks/prksa3.php#otherparks) )

Directions to the park can be found on their web site and here...

Those wanting to stay the night should look for lodging in either Melbourne or Melbourne Beach. Camping is available at either Sebastian Inlet State Park or Long Point Park.

We chose a location near the beach so we might get an opportunity to see migrating raptors. It is very possible to see kestrels, merlins and even peregrines at that time of year.

Activities:
Apprentice Workshop; We will be covering basic equipment making including:
Choosing the right jess leather, what to look for.
Making jesses, leather jesses and a method for making nylon parachute cord jesses.
Braided leashes
BC traps, including new methods using coated steel leader nooses
And much more...

Beach Trapping Techniques:

Hopefully by next year we will be able to trap passage peregrines so this year we will highlight typical peregrine trapping techniques and will have several peregrine trapping sets on display.

We will have several different types of beach trapping sets on display suitable for trapping merlins also. And I'm sure Spence will be happy to show off his unique invention, the "Wise Flying Cannon", a small suspended cannon net for trapping merlins & peregrines.

Because we will be in a public park there won't be any actual trapping going on and none of the sets will have lure birds. And I do not believe the parks allow pets so no birds or dogs.

I will bring a variety of equipment, hoods, perches, transport boxes, traps and I would encourage everyone to bring some of your items to show off. It's a great opportunity to share ideas and techniques with one another and those new to the sport. And by all means if you have something you would like to share with the group that would be great, bring your equipment and plan to give a demonstration.

Everyone is on their own for food so bring a picnic lunch and I will have a cooler full of water. Folding chairs will also be handy and we will be on the beach so bring the whole family and your surf board or fishing rods if you'd like to make a day of it.

This will be a great opportunity to kick off the season. I look forward to seeing everyone there.
