Hello sohighlyunlikely,

Welcome to NAFEX. Please sign all your posts with at least your first name. You can click on the "User CP" (User Control Panel) and add your signature and location info automatically to all your posts there.

Also, please tell us a bit about yourself and the bird(s) you fly. We really like photos of birds, especially great action shots like the one of your bird. I moved your post to its own thread as well.

If there is anything I can help you with, please feel free to give a shout.

Best Regards,

Nice shot. I won't ask for your life story. Just curious though, did the rabbit make the brush pile? From the picture the timing looks like it will be close.

Per request I started falconry in WA state and am now in St Louis MO. This is my 8th red-tail and I am currently training 2 dachshunds for flushing rabbits for the bird.

The bird(Aquila) did get that rabbit from the picture. Here are the next 2 pics in the photo taken in succession.

Signed
Steve

Went to a NAFA Meet many years ago in St. Louis. The air port was on the edge of town at the time. Lost my car in a mall there. Went in the mall there were no car's in the lot, when I came out after eating, it was full, some big Thanksgiving Sales.frus Lot of rabbit when we were there.
Had a ball.

St Louis suburbs still have quite a few cotton tails and squirrels but the good fields keep getting built on and move everything further out every year. Plus we have more falconers every year too. I'd say there's a couple dozen falconers in and around St Louis County. Then figure a third of those guys are Harris hawkers taking 3 or more rabbits per hunting trip. I'd say about 500 or more rabbits are caught every year by falconers within a 25 mile radius of the airport. So I think it's fair to say we have a lot of rabbits.

Krys:
The hold meet was a ball, no rabbits at the mall. But now I know why the put those letters/number at the end of each parking lanefrus The mall had a good place to eat and opened early in the morning. I have never found a mall that was fun yet!

HI Everetkhorton,

Was that the meet back in 85' (or so I think I've heard talk of it) I heard it was the last one NAFA held here because St Louis doesn't have have any longwinger game set up with large open spaces for that crowd. It was before I lived here the 1st time and I just moved back here a few years ago.

Thanks for asking about the dachshunds but there's Not much to tell about them yet. I ran a beagles over my hawk when I was in Washington state and here in the St Louis suburbs dachshunds are a better fit. Here I hunt smaller fields in closer quarters to industrial businesses. A beagle would run to far and be to noisy, drawing to much attention to my activities(though completely legal I don't like having to explain myself or deal with any whiny PETA wannabes).
So any way the dachshunds are to young still to young to be trusted with a hawk yet. The 2 month old dog (J.D.) is a CKC long haired female dappled in a color called wild boar. The male (Grant) is a 4 month old AKC wire coated black and tan. I have been scent training both of them for about a month, both have a strong prey drive for rabbits and are doing well. Grant will stay tight to the trail in medium to heavy cover and will zig zag the scent line always nose down in short grass. J.D. occasionally beats Grant to the rabbit by air scenting and taking short cuts. She should get more serous as she gets older.
Here are 4 pics.
