We got about three inches of the lightest powder on Friday night and Saturday morning was picture perfect for hawking. Here are two shots of my buddy's Gregs birds, 7 year old Finn gos and 9 year old passage Harris. Note the tapeworm cyst on the jacks front shoulder (YUK!).

Paul,
Great pics! Is that the Gos that's had it's scalp partially torn off chasing Jacks?? -Tim

wow! super shots.

We get bot fly larva here that look like that. Gross to say the least. They crawl out of the hide when the cotton tail dies. Usually gone when it gets cold though.

Awsome action shots!

Thanks, I'm slowly learning, need to get a polarizing filter for those bright sun & snow shots. Yup, that's the bird, but it were cottontails, he'd crash into the brush so hard he kept ripping the hide above his eyes.

I just don't know what to say, it is as good as being there but not the having the cold. Do you get much snow?

Hi Ev,

We can get hammered with snow, two years ago we got 30" in a day or so, it stayed in the teens and calm winds for a couple of more days and then the wind blew, like 50mph. We had huge drifts that closed the roads everywhere for days. Unlike up north the towns around here might have 1 snow plow, so when it does snow everyone is SOL.

Typically we get snow in the 3-10" range and it melts away pretty quick.

Hi Brent,
It's a Nikon D90 with a 55-200mm zoom, the 70-300mm would be a better choice for most falconry action shots.

Paul, that is a freakin awesome shot! clappclappclapp Love that foot reaching out! I have to say, I enjoyed Darryl Perkins book, Understanding Goshawks, but the photo's sucked. If it had photo's like this one it, it would have been much better.

That shot is poetry, Paul. Damn! I would love to have that kind of photography applied to my RT thumpin' a snowshoe after a fresh snowfall. It would be a tough shot to get though, which is why I'll settle for a jack. Got a spare room for a couple weeks? :D

I didn't think they could get any better than the last onces you took in the snow, I was wrong. Outstanding. Thanks for posting them.

Incredible picturs Paul. The snow adds an element that I never get to experience. 18 years now, and I have still never hawked in the snow. For some reason I really want to.

Very nice indeed. Wow, should be in a book.

Those flights happen so fast.

Amazes me how you fly your bird and get shots like that. clapp
