Saw a big harlans rt today in bakersfield, I bumped her and her tail almost looked white/brown and seemed to have some red in it. I took a cruddy picture of her flying up to a pole that I can post next week. That's the kind of rt I have always wanted and I found myself without a trap. Oh well I will bring it next time!

Ive been doing more video lately than Still but your still action shots are great!

conorhawk

thanks Chuck i am on flickr and was not taking that many photos of my bird untill now
because i was training, training, and training. she is a great bird almost making a kill every day i fly her but i may be puting her up soon due to the fact that she had to have her crop cut open to get a rabbit bone pulled out and her new feathers are coming in and i don't want them to have stress marks on the that is why i am flying her at trap weight!!! to keep her fat and happy. and the second part to why i want to put her up is because my fields only have about 5 rabbits in them now and i don't want to kill the last ones.

I am shooting with a nikon d5000 right now it is my new camera but i also have a nikon d40x and a nikon p5100 and a sony vx2100. i used to use the nikon p5100 for a small point N shoot for kill shots but i wanted to have some slope soaring shots and wildlife shots too.

you need to make a thread for your pics i like all of the videos of the harris hawk you got there a male catching jackrabbits that is very very cool!

One thing Conor, I would start playing with your fstops on your setting to see the difference in color and do you use any filters??

Rage
01-04-2010, 02:37 PM
The Fstop wont affect the color. The only thing the aperature does is mix up the depth of field. Color will be affected by filters though. I mainly use the uv protectors and a Diffusion now and then. Though I think a good Polarizer would be nice. Dual coated but that adds a good hundred bucks right out of the gate.

Connor: I would just like to say your photos are very good but as important for such a young falconer it is awesome to see you getting that kind of performance from your bird and under limited hunting conditions.

Very impressive.clapp

79 south has eagles, coopers, red tails, kestrels, prairie falcons, peregrines, even a harris hawk! i have never seen it but my falconer friends have.

when i see a red tail on a pole looking straight up there is normally an eagle above it.

79 south has eagles, coopers, red tails, kestrels, prairie falcons, peregrines, even a harris hawk!

I've personally spotted goldens, peregrine, prairie, merlin, kestrel, coopers, sharpshin, red tail, red shoulder, harrier, white tail kites and harris. Only 20 miles as the crow flies to Temecula. Makes sense that most if not all species would be seen there.

Haven't see a ferrug yet.

A couple of years ago I spotted a pack of harris' crossing 79 between Oak Grove and the Chihuahua Valley turn off. A total of five, four landed in a elderberry and straggler caught up and crabbed for a few seconds then they all continued north. Everyone I mentioned it to said I was crazy that there were no harris' in Cali.

the peregrine falcons i see are in the air or on a pole or dead tree snag eating a dove or pigeon. ferruginous hawks are normally thermalling or on the top of a telephone pole not on the cross beam (most of the time). the prairies are mostly in a dirt field that has a few tumble weeds in it and they are thermaling above it. the merlins are on dead snags of trees or fence posts. and kestrels and red tails are everywhere.

ok here is the news on 79 south i saw a peregrine i stoped to take a photo and noticed it had jesses on it!!! i called my sponsor and he said to swing a lure too bad i did not have one the only thing i had was a shoe!
so i swung it and here he comes off the pole hits it a few times and lands on another pole so i run across the street and throw my shoe on the ground about 4 feet in front of me and he lands on it!
i was able to see that he had anklets, jesses, and a yellow zip tie band. i could not get close enough to grab him and he took off. this was at 4:50 pm
so i left the house at 7:25 am today with my sponsor to look for it but no luck.

if anyone lost what looks like a barbary peregrine with a yellow zip tie band on the left leg and half molted. it was sighted on deportola rd. off of 79 south in temecula CA on 1/10/10 at about 4:45pm

I always keep a lure, glove and string ball with me. The lure, is just in case I see a hawk with jesses. The string ball (usually some braided masonry line). lt is used to 'wind up' the hawk. The bird lands on the lure. (with the string attached to the lure). I walk in circles around the hawk holding the other end of the string, tugging it up around the hawk's feed as I circle. After a few of turns, the hawk's feet are restrained and I can grab the hawk to help find it's falconer. An old technique that works well.

trust me i try'd it all, i ran all of the fences looking for any line hanging off them and there was nothing. too bad i just hope the bird was found somehow by the owner.

Connor, I don't want to sound as though I am scolding you (I'm not). That sort of info should be posted ASAP, not saved for an exciting suprise.
The quicker that type of info gets to the falconry community the sooner the bird can be reclaimed.
BTW awesome photos. I love this thread. You have some real talent. Keep at it and I will buy your books someday.

i know, i talked to the local falconer and said that they would look for the bird too and that they did not know of anyone who lost a peregrine. the bird was in bad shape as far as feathers go and had no telemerty on it i don't know of any falconer that would fly a peregrine with no telemetry unless it fell off?

Zarafia

Could well have fallen off or been otherwise lost.
Sounds like he wasn't too long lost since he still came in to the "lure".
Nice try anyway Connor.
Also remember that a transmitter on a backpack is very hard to see, even up close. Feathers can easily hide the body of the transmitter completely and the antenna wont be easy to see either.
And good on you for trying to lure him in rather than just snapping pics of him.

there was horse fences and i thought that there might have been some sting or twine hanging from them that might of helped me wrap the bird

Conor, I have a D40X. It is actually my school's camera. I am considering getting my wife a D5000. Looks like you have both. Would you mind comparing the two if you have a minute? Can you also verify that the D5000 does have a live view in the viewfinder like the less expensive cameras? Also, the lenses are interchangeable, correct? Thanks for any info.

conorhawk
02-08-2010, 08:58 PM
Yes the lenses are interchangeable the nikon d5000 is a great camera but if you have the money go for a d300s or something like that. the d40x it also good but has a slower shutter speed and can't shoot in hd video.
