:D Well I made the plung this year after losing my hen gos this past spring to Asper and now the proud owner of a Male NA Gos from Kory & Bryan's breeding project.......Jedi ! Arrived in great shape after 13 hours on the plane last night...see pics. Placed him in his new nest and he was pumped for action. The best was as I signed the paperwork in the airport he thoughtfully backed up and sliced through the slits in the carrier 2-3 feet and just miss the attendent by microns! He is 26 days old.

Hi Jim!

Ol' Blue looks great! Had he ate all his food in the bowl when you opened the crate? Red had, but he hadn't been on nearly the length of flight Blue had.

I like his new name.. Jedi!

I can just see him waving his wing over a duck pond and saying, in his best Alex Guiness voice..

"you will flush cleanly off the water and not bail back into the pond"..

LOL.. Please keep us posted!

Best Regards,

When he arrived he had approx. 10-15 gms. of food left and was not hungry. He was very curious of his new nest and really enjoyed the everygreens.
My close friend who has flown gos's for over 30 years was utterly amazed at how laid back and non-stressed he seemed and was very happy to run around the shop checking things out.
Even the ride home in the nest was relaxing and was curious to look out the window.

Actually that's what I am going to do very soon. I like to take the nest to a busy highway and sit in the shade read a book and let then watch the cars, truckes etc. go by. He sure seems happy........jm

Jim,

I got to the Continental office at about 5:30 am and the flight wasn't until 7:30.

I let him eat on the counter in the office while the three guys working their watched.. He took about 1/2 crop.. They though he was pretty cool!

After he ate, I put him in the carrier and he was off..

I am glad that he did eat on the flight. His bowl was completely full and I put some water on top to keep it wet... 13 hours was a long one but it is a good piece of mind knowing that Continental protects the birds from the heat at all points of the flight..

I had done the same thing with Red and he ate all his food by the time he got to OKC.. Good to know..

Blue and the others were exposed to everything, cars, kids, dogs, cats, lawn mowers, etc.. Here is a photo from the 4th with Red and Blue being petted and lots of pictures taken by the people next to us at fireworks. There was also a group of about 20 people playing Frisbee out in front of us too.. They liked to watch the Frisbee fly in front of them.. The last photos is the bird sleeping while the BIG fireworks were going off about 300 yards from where we were parked..

Does the tree/plant produce some funny little red berry like things with stones in the middle?

http://dic.academic.ru/pictures/enwiki/84/TXbaccata.jpg

This is a european yew often planted as ornamentals in gardens. I think the seeds in the berries are toxic to mammals but not seed eating birds. Don't know about the greenery.

No but the needles look the same. The ones I saw had fruit in the spring, not sure about midsummer or fall. with the toxicity being so high and in the whole plant, makes me think if its worth taking the chance - even if it turned out not to be yew. just my two cents.

:DWell the days are sure flying by and old Jedi is really growing fast along with maturing .
We have had some wicked thunder storms which has prevented me from doing more baggies, but he has been a real sweetheart in the house.
Besides the constant snowfall it is nice to be able to spend hours with him daily inside in the evenings. He has feed at 24/7 ideaayet and is really polite and will tolerate almost everything including the dogs. He was somewhat fearful of the glove but I think he is over that and has been letting me pick up and weighing daily.
His weight has been @ 30.8 oz. before eating or crop showing.
I do not know how this compares to other males (NA) but it is what it is at this point?
I learned early in my career that "heart" means much more than weight.
noidea Any advice is welcome as this is my second eyas (gos) and is going much better than my finnish/german hen gos several years ago confusedd. Comments please......jm

When getting up in the morning I check to insure thaat he has food in his bowl and when I looked at Approx. 18" he flew off his perch and chittered and pecked my hand once and started to eat franticlly. I reached down and stroked his feet etc. and he was fine with no attention to me. My wife all day check and made sure he had feed with no issues but tonight when I came home at 11 pm he chittered and flew to nest and ate but did not react to my hands or touching him. He has never been out of food so far. confuseddAny comments????.....confusedd..jm

my gos is just like this even now at 74 days. I think it will change when they experience REAL hunger later on. It may be a result of my just not wanting to wait FOREVER for the bird to eat. She has become used to me cutting things up for her and continues to expect it. Ashby will even come to the lure and act wildly excited about it, but not eat the tidbit that is on the lure...she'll just foot it and jump around and eat tidbits I hand to her.

[QUOTE=RTJim;91617]frus Today was the first sign of "bad" behavior.

Might be time to start feeding him somewhere else as he may get territorial about his nest and food bowl. This is just the age I started two-a-day feeds and took the bird away from the place where she is perched and outdoors to eat in different places.

Well at 49 days was several events that took place in Jedi's world.

The nest was removed and a new disch for food was introduced.
The bell was attached to his foot in the evening.
The introduction of another strange dog was on the scenc with no hitches after the first 6 seconds.
A baggie sparrow was thrown.
Carring on the glove was done for approx. 30 minute.
Three dogs were running around free will.
Adding another toy was also introduced.
What was, i guess normal, is that sfter the several chasees at the sparrow and after killing and pucking he walk away to explore more area to "nose".
He has been very good with the food situation and allows anything to be done at his feet etc.
I am, so far, really surprized at is demeanor and does not scream! He is though very fat at 31.40 oz. [890 gms.].

Hi Jim,

Glad to hear that Jedi is doing well. I am sure that you are as eager as everyone else to get to the cooler weather of the fall! Come on frost!

Jedi's big sister caught her first wild head of game a couple days ago, a starling in a walk up flight.. Pretty cool!

Where did his top weight end up and where is it now?

I probally broke all the rules but I had a very bad experience with an eyas finnish bird several years back. I wanted to have a great handling gos with very little screaming and manners along with great demeanor so I had the gos in my living room from June until second week of October. I used a timed self feeder and never feed the gos in his new mew with him on a static line...seen in the pics. I very carefully cut his weight from 29.5 oz to 26.5 oz. He has caught numerous quail, two pheasants, two rabbits all bagged so he is building confidence and very aggressive on game so far. He has tackled a cock pheasant late afternoon...hit him hard but lost grip and flew hard in another 10 feet and grabed him by the wing butts and held. Trades off with lure so easy that it seems to good to be true. I need to bring my camera more but with the light changing I am rushing daily to get home. This past weekend he rode in the GH with not banging around and did miss a wild rabbit and crashed the brush at at 27 oz. and I think he really eeds to be the 26.5 oz range for more aggresivness.....jm

Well after the great duck catch which I had him at 26.0 oz. he was really pissy and acted after a full crop like he had nothing to eat. First time like that for him. On Sunday he was wound up but at 27.5 oz. and was more like old'self. On Monday's feeding when picked up he was 27.25 oz. and was grouchy and some threating body language but okay..hyper. On Tuesday at 27.5 oz he was a lunatic and never acted so pissed off and threating during his eating as never before so I gave him a full crop of rabbit meat as it was getting colder...high 30's at night. Today he was a wopping 28.65 oz but acting like 27 or less with body language not as aggressive. I wanted him to chase a cockbird so we planted a big male with full long tail and we went hunting. I never flew him that heavy but he really seemed in "the mood". After busting the brush my wife got to the bird...kicked the brush and the cockbird blasted off ka..ka..ka..ka..ka and rising like in the movies with Jedi pumping real hard....coming in low and ringing up it was a classical...perfect grab the breast and bringing the cockbird to the ground!
When they hit he tried to change footing and the chase was off again but he was on that bird like a "cheap suit" and plucking like a madman who never ate for 4 days.
What ??? the bird broke free again but he again had the bird contolled and the bird was playing possum because the minute the bird changed one foot he made a huge move in the higher grasss and took off with the chase >125 yards and heading for the fence row with the gos doing a wing over and back on the cockbird but in the briars. The bird was trying to head deeper in the briars and until I was able to cross the barbed wird fence the bird was running through the brush. The gos quickly came to the lure then glove and we trit to fine the pheasant but could not and the sun was setting fast and darkness was upon us. Back to the mew and time for the final feeding. His demeanor was very good and did not seem to be mad but very much in the hunting framework.
Questions or comments please......

Why the real bad behavior at 26.0 oz vs. 26.25?
Why the real hard chase at 28.65 oz, as I never flew him that heavy and use to not come to the lure readily above 27.25?
Could this be his new weight?...but at hard penned he was 29-30oz.
This is my second eyas gos..first male............cheers.......jm
