And very random indeed.

What a great few days for my son.

Hits 18 and passes his driving test on his birthday. Next weekend he leaves home to live in London, having gained a place at the Central Ballet School.

I took this picture a few minutes ago, before he heads off to another party.
Heck, he looks like he could be the next James Bond (mmmmmm, a ballet dancing James Bond? Hell, why not)!

Best wishes,

Tony.

Congratulations to him and I would say 'break a leg' except that it looks like he already might have....ouch, something had to pop there!

Cheers Pete.

I don't know about 'pop' --- if that was my leg, there'd have been a 'bang'!

Best wishes,

Tony.

PS That's the same little boy that's in my avatar. Oh how time flies!

Yes, congrats to your boy Tony- sounds like he is in for quite the adventure.

Can you elaborate on that anklet reward tag design? I have not seen that before and it looks like an elegant solution.

Thanks,
Tanner

A very random photo, taken simply because I'm excited at the prospect of the very nearly here new season (hence the preparatory polish;)).

Best wishes,

Getting ready to put mine on the hybrids. Fran Made a pretty slick product here. The gyr still moulting so he'll have to wait.
Very cool on you're son. Nothing makes you happier than when you see you're kids happy. Best of luck to him.

Thanks all for the kind words. I showed my son when he arrived home, who was surprised that other falconers would have any interest, so an extra thank you;).

This picture should help illustrate the anklets a little better Tanner. Essentially they're an engraved metal anklet that forms an integral part of it by encapsulating the leather part that comes into contact with the hawks leg.

They're available from Spanish falconer Fran Bolinches, and they are, as David points out, a very nice product.

Best wishes,

Tony.

Thanks Cindy. I'll be in Williamsport all of the month of October. My daughter lives in Harrisburg, so, we will be visiting.
Oh, very cool. I'm hoping to get out and get some nice falconry photos this season.

There's something very endearing about a falcon in that mood --- a far cry from the mood she was in when she embedded her talons in me the day we took her up!
You've done a cracking job with her Adam, that will stand her in good stead for the rest of her life.

Best wishes,

Tony.

Hi Tony,

Evelyn seems to always be in the mood. When I go to her in the morning I am greeted with head spinning. When she is on the block and I walk about the garden she just spins her head at me and the dogs.
Now she is over her illness she is beginning to regain her fitness and move forward.
Yesterday, she was in her playful mood when suddenly she left the block Goshawk fast and narrowly missed a blackbird. Midweek, a Blue Tit wasn't so lucky.

Thanks again for your help for that week I was away.

I believe Phil is right that its an Imperial Eagle. You don't hear much about this species of eagle being flown, and I'm not sure why as it certainly looks well armed and nicely put together. I know that it is quite rare in Spain, but I'm not sure what the numbers are like in the rest of its range.
This pic might give an idea of how that previous one started. http://www.pbase.com/image/112417094
Hi Pete
I fortunate to see Imperial Eagles when visiting Spain 2002 when I competed in the Leon Sky trails.
We stopped off on the highway on way from Madrid to Leon to weather the falcons. Way up in the blue skys we witnessed two Imperials eagle thermalling.
As far as I hear Imperials Eagles populations in Spain have increased since I was last there

Hi Scott,

often in those hawk and dog shots, one or other will look awkward or odd. But to get them both looking that way is rare indeedtoungeout.

Nice shot.

Funnily enough a photographer friend joined me for some hawking today, and I showed him a picture he took of the jerkin I flew last season on the cover of a Spanish falconry magazine (if only I could read Spanish).

Tony, You heard correctly (Helen must have spilled the beans). I'm thinking of coming over your way right after my dick season closes this year. Maybe spend the month of March cruising around the UK, visiting friends... Was hoping to see you in person, and see Helen and the Fords, etc., etc.. I'll be in touch!

Not Helen this time. We have another mutual friend who I'm trying to persuade to hide in your suitcase;)

I'll give some thought to the possibilities in March, but to keep on topic, a random picture taken yesterday of my own odd couple.

Oh man!! That sure is an interesting type-o!
I'm going to assume that you all understood that I meant to write "duck season."

I actually just took a close look at my keyboard, thinking to myself, "is the "I" really near the "U"?"

Reminds me of that story of the poor bloke who got his wedding tackle grabbed by a pair of Harris' hawks at the Welsh Hawking Club meet many years ago (I think 1994) while he was relieving himself.

Anyway...... Nice team Tony! They look pretty polished/slick!

There was me holding my breath, wondering whether you'd tell of the typo, or develop Ray's 'spotted dick' ruse:eek:

As for the team, I have to say it's a team of three --- falcon, pointer, and me.
Thankfully the falcon is polished enough to make the two weak links less relevant;)

I think the reason I admire the photo so much Tony is because not only is it representative of some of the finest Falconry furniture available. For me at least it also offers the opportunity to reflect on the finer details.

I'll take that as a compliment then, thank you.

I had a photographer friend join me yesterday, who managed to get some pictures of the flight that allowed me to reflect on the finer details of it, or at least the little section at the bottom of the stoop, in a way that I'd not been able to at the time.

Tony.

Nice ones Mr. James!
On my way out to fly Echo this morning, I bumped into some local riff raff about a block from my house. I pulled over and snapped a few pics. The last pic I was laying on my truck seat and shooting up through the windshield as she had just landed right there and I was afraid if I moved it would bump her out of view.

Just a pic of a wild Harris' that I see often at the same place when I take out the Cooper's and Merlin. Its a very confiding bird and seems that it won't be around long as it sometimes sits at this spot which about 50 feet off the dirt road, and when you stop to look and take pictures, it doesn't move off unless you get too pushy. I just wish the angle of the sun was better for the shot.

We need to get that changed I'd say. They're getting much more widespread than they used to be. Alamogordo has a good population going and a few groups down around the border with Texas near El Paso as well. Being as they are still lotteried, I don't know why it should make any difference now where they are taken from. The urban ones like these tend to have very short lives due to the increased level of electrocution and collisions compared to wild groups.

Western Part of the state? I thought much, if not most of South Dakota was good longwing country? I have hawked western and as far east as Murdo and trapped east river and didn't see any bad longwing country. I can't think of anywhere where i have seen more longwing quarry, including Prairie Chickens, Sharptails, many Pheasants, Ducks, Huns. I think that Sage Grouse closed to hunting a few years back. What is it like where you are?

Here in the southeast corner of the state there is very poor pheasant populations and the few pockets that have them are pay per hunt, public walkin areas or saved for family/friends. I've tried flying a longwing a few times and always come to the realization that it's pretty futile. Aggressive farming due to ethonal and high corn prices make for dwindling habitat. I'm right along the Missouri River too so duck populations tend to be in nonhawkable settings. I spend a lot of time out in the countryside and sometimes go many days and even weeks without a pheasant sighting. If one is willing to to drive around 100 miles in a more westerly and northen direction there would be some good longwing country.

No, she's a bird Pete Widener produced out of his great tiercel Peales "Charlie" and a female Pete also flew for a couple years. I don't think there is any blood from the wild aleutian birds in her.

I was doing some bush hogging today and the resident pair of rts showed up with the kids in tow. In the first picture I had made two passes on each side of the strip of grass and the male came stooping behind the tractor, slamming into the strip. I turned around and drove right next to him and he never flinched. I was amazed at his nerve. Tractor running and bush hog churning, never phased him, 4 ft away! Got to love a rt!

I've had red tails, Swainsons, Feruginous, Marsh hawks and kestrels follow my tractor when I am cutting hay and baling. I have seen them all make kills cokes to the tractor as if I'm not there. It's not like the equipment is quiet or anything. I had a haggard Swainsons catch a Vesper sparrow out of the air and go to ground right in front of the tractor. I had to stop as he was eating it as I got up to him. You can't get that close in a truck! I guess they don't see the tractor as anything less than a lunch wagon.

Here's Mikie. He's a cross between a kestral falcon and a red-tailed hawk. And I think some of the neighbors parrot. He doesn't seem to want to eat my pigeons. He's more into catch breed and release. I should have the badest flock of pigeons in the county by the end of the summer.

Colorado used to have a last eyass take date as July 15. That really sucked. I took an eyass at a couple days old as I had no other option. But it worked out great so I guess it really didn't suck as I would have waited till it was a brancher. But she was one of my best and most fun bird ever. You are going to have fun.

Nice video Ricco. I see now how different the areas where we would hunt them are. Most places I see coots have cattails or emergent vegetation higher than my head ringing a wetland.

Thanks Ross!
It's the same here in CA for the most part. The cattails are what the coots are heading towards. This spot is an exception, ideal for filming- we were able to flush in the direction of the camera and then kind of predict where and how the flight may go.

Absolutely unbelievable, with a record of 14 wild pheasants this early in her career it makes her one of the most successful Ferrug's I have ever heard of. I would love to hear about how she does it and of course, I would love to see her fly sometime as well.

Wow!!! To repeat the others, what are the flights, set ups, etc. like? You obviously spent a lot thought and action getting to this point. I enjoyed the posts of your raising and training of her. Then it went kinda silent and I often wondered how it was going. Now we know! Will be interesting as winter moves in as they are very cold hardy birds and the winter pheasants should motivate her big time, as they already are. Way to go.

Some of us have been lucky enough to see the tail chases this Aplomado does on bunnies. She is very fast and when she misses she gets up and stays on the bunny until it either is caught or makes the hole. Its not unusual for her to makes 5 or 6 attempts during the chase. She had this bunny turning every way it could and it wasn't that close to me. I was using a 300mm lens and this picture is cropped a lot. She is fun to watch.

First 2 pics are the female. The 2nd 2 are the male. Saw the nest first, then the female About 20 minutes later, the male came screaming in and landed in a tree about 40 to 50 yards away. The female then took off for that tree while the male flew right to the spot where the female had been sitting. They would not bring the food to the nest while we were there. These pics were from at least 50 t0 60 yards away with branches in between the birds and me.

Here is one of Lucy, and imprint female Wisconsin Goshawk with an imped turkey tail.

They were the only feathers I had when I got her and her tail was 75% gone, so I made due. I had planned on fanning the tail feathers out and mounting on a plaque from the turkey I had shot that spring.

As soon as I got the tail feathers on her, she started catching rabbits and ducks.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z303/korykoch/Lucywithimpedturkeytail.jpg

Here is a shot of COB, an 8 year Peales falcon I flew a few years back. She had been in a breeding project after being flown for a few years.

She taught me a ton and, had she not died of a stroke the following spring, I likely would have kept flying her. She was awesome.

Yeah, those feathers are just frayed not tipped. I've caught many wild goshawks and have yet to catch one less than feather perfect, juvie or hag. Typically they have amazingly perfect talons also.

Today was interesting. Having a mini meet with some friends we had a few birds out today. One of the birds had some excellent squirrel flights and then took off in a stoop over a gate into a fenced in area on a farmette. First thing I said was "Hope she doesn't have a thing for chickens" as we took off running.. well, boy was I wrong.

And, the falconer was hopping fences to my right during the initial set of pictures to assist, but really, the bird had the muskrat under control when he got there. No bites at all, thankfully, because the teeth on this thing are gnarly.

Gregory, interesting to me that she seems so calm on the nest with a drone hovering above her. I'd thought of using this method to look into goshawks nests and those of cliff nesting raptors but was concerned about the drone being attacked and ending up with an injured parent bird(s). Any aggression occurring? What species have you looked in on and what range are you typically at when shooting? Thanks for the help.

It brings up a question for sure...we have permits to "enter" nest sites and one might argue that drones are much less invasive that climbing the tree or other trees to look in in person. Having said that, the thought of drones around nest sites is still a scary concept to me in terms of stress and potential injury to the nesting pair if the act aggressively.

Neat shot of a friends Aplomado coming in for some pigeons. I just thought it came out neat with it being all silhouette on an overcast background.

Sorry, I didn't see this before.

I watched 3 red tail and 3 cooper nests this year with it, pics and video clips from all. I had no "close calls" I had one female red tail after the hatch leave the nest into a soar and yell at the drone but never more than "intimidation" tactics. One male coops would come into and buzz, but never get closer than around 20'. If the male showed up I would simply take a vertical climb and return the drone and land.

Nesting females showed no interest in leaving the nest or what the drone was doing. In fact, I even have a video clip of a mother red tail bringing food in and standing on the nest feeding week old chicks.

Connection pictures weren't taken by me, but the falconer himself (somehow he can carry a camera with a 2 foot lens and fly a bird... beats me how he does it lol).

My first bird in nearly 20 years - a late trapped kestrel. She reminded me of many lessons I forgot and taught me some I never knew. So happy to be back and looking forward to a new season and a new hunting partner!

Thanks Paul! I can't take credit for the first one, my friend's husband took it at the GLFA meet.

I'm without a raptor right now, for the first time in many years. Breeze is out raising young with his female; Smoke was released right after her first kill. The planned bilateral foot surgery has been done; am now in "feet up and don't walk" mode. Bored! So, here's a photo of my new Belgian Tervuren pup - he's doing great, but sure doesn't understand why we don't get out for our 3-5 mile walks everyday like we used to! Here's Darboshea Troubadour - "True" - enjoying a walk with me prior to surgery. Can't wait for late summer/early fall, when we can get out and trap a new Red-Tail!
