Here is one of Lucy, and imprint female Wisconsin Goshawk with an imped turkey tail.

They were the only feathers I had when I got her and her tail was 75% gone, so I made due. I had planned on fanning the tail feathers out and mounting on a plaque from the turkey I had shot that spring.

As soon as I got the tail feathers on her, she started catching rabbits and ducks.

Here is a shot of COB, an 8 year Peales falcon I flew a few years back. She had been in a breeding project after being flown for a few years.

She taught me a ton and, had she not died of a stroke the following spring, I likely would have kept flying her. She was awesome.

Years ago I had two cotton tops come in on a falcon of mine. Wonderful sight! Wheeler's book has some classical pictures of tundra falcons along with a photo taken by Gordon Court which will knock your socks off.

It so wild to see how much lighter those Richardsons are compared to our Columbaris. Great looking bird! She is a passage bird right? Also, better you seeing that wild aplomado than me!!! Man that would have been such a temptation!!! Do you see them often? I hope to someday fly one myself.

PeteJ has seen some over the years around here--they are not at all common even though the P-fund releases a bunch about a 40 minute drive from here. The horned owls ate quite well this year, apparently. Paul Juergens is a member of this forum, doesn't log on much though, and works that release effort. I traded the bird in the photo a baggie sparrow for some video of it coming in (the footage sucked though, I mostly missed it, unfortunately).

You can't fly these native Aplos anyway, they're endangered, so it'll be decades before you might be able to fly a wild one. But, you can buy the Peruvian ones...if you have 3 grand or thereabouts.

Pretty close to getting these two Barbary/Teitas airborne after many years of being up for breeding. We'll see how they can do after such a long hiatus. Mostly it will be matter of keeping Prairies from trying to mess with them at this point.

^The bird in this pic actually grabbed the rabbit a it was jumping over the creek in the background. Made a nice cannonball splash, picture was taken after the bird was dragged out onto dry land.

Here is a shot of Matt's eyas wild hacked tiercel peregrine. I think this is an 09 bird. This thing could really fly and proved it by taking off for about 2 hours and flying all over the sky. He had all of us looking for him and Paul Jurgens eventaully tracked him down and threw out one of the dead ducks to get him back. This was at the NM longwing meet this last weekend.

This is a picture of Tim Riordan's {AZ falconry club president} falcon named "Little Johnny". This is an awesome duck hawk and proved it at the NM Longwing meet this last weekend. I am pretty sure that Tim left this bird in New Mexico with Tanner and his dad {Ed Schaub} and the two of them will be flying this bird for the rest of this season. Correct me if I'm wrong Tanner.

Here's the best video clip that I shot this weekend at the meet--Paul Juergens' small peregrine female "Laila" crushing a gadwall. Inspection showed that the hit ripped a massive hole in the lower breast muscle, tore the keel in half and ruptured the digestive tract.

Baaaahhh, peregrines....you know, you've seen one, you've seen them all!

Here's video that Altamira/Omar shot of the merlin--the first flight was actually excellent with the doves firing out across that valley and Sal putting one into an oak tree. The last part shows what a merlin/dove flight looks like without binoculars--lots of blue sky after a while! She ran that one a long way up and out--didn't connect, but looked good doing it.

This is another one of Matt's birds. I don't remember the falcons name, but, I believe it was bred by Gary Alton who was a great falconer that passed away about a year ago. This bird caught a bufflehead on this flight and they are really hard to catch because you can't get them to leave the water. The last picture Matt had just picked the falcon up off the bufflehead.

Aquila Verraux- kindly nesting behind my house.
This nest site has been used for over 20 years (so I'm told). In fact the original nest was so big that it fell over, the pair rebuilt the nest you're seeing about 10m from the old site.

My old female Gos used to love those when we lived up north. Once we moved down here they tended to be replaced by Burrowing Owls. Sometimes you just can't stop them from getting them. Neat shots though.

I've learned in the woods and bogs of Maine that it's all in danger if it moves. Actually Scott K specifically warned me about short-ears but so far I've managed to avoid them.

I think the one catching the owl is different than the one on the ground eating, notice the frost on the grass in the first pics. I think the gos eating is a male, can't say for sure about the one catching the owl.

Yeah, snow even. And I noticed the eyes are still pretty yellow on the ground photo too. The eyes on my gos are quite a bit darker than that now (mid-December).

Here is my HH almost catching a short eared owl in her first season. One field I go to has lots of these owls in it.

My old female used to catch Short-eared, Barn, Barred, Screech and Long-eared.....if they were in her view she would usually end up with them if she wanted them. I really didn't like it though when she was get all testy about GHOs. More than a few times in the woods we would bump one of those accidentally and she would be after it. Often they would end up on the same limb of a tree with the Gos doing that sideways walk across the limb toward the owl...it became a game of chicken to see who would break first. not to digress from the thread, but since were talking owls, my current hen RT has managed some kind of run-in with an owl every season for the last 3 years. her first was a GHO. both walked/limped away with a firm respect for the other. she will go out of her way to get to one if given the chance. 3rd day in the woods this season it was a hen barred owl.......great pics by the way!!

Hi Ev. Yep it is a merganser, common merganser. She snatched up a drake pintail and carried across the flooded "pond" today. I really should have brought the camera up, but was expecting she would have dropped it. She didn't kill the merganser. Today's pintail was the first duck for her this year. She is going pretty slow, literally and figuratively.

Had a good weekend--Paul Juergens took us to a remote ranch where he has permission. This pond was about an hour drive on dirt and worth every bump in the road.

This sub flew like a cross between a harris and a gos. It was kind of neet. Stephen

We were back at that field yesterday--it's loaded with dove--and the caracara was still there, as was a passage female harris' and a prairie falcon. The day prior, there was a merlin and a coops there--magnetic couple of acres apparently. The carcas that the caracara is feeding on is nearly devoid of edible material--wonder what his next move will be?

For some reason, my camera went out of focus when she was hitting the goose. All I have is a couple of blurrs for a few frames. She really flies the geese like she wants to kill em, she flies the ducks and pheasants like she wants to play with them. Not sure what that is all about, but I think I am just going to stop fighting a losing battle and fly the geese.

You are right, thats just a small space heater with a fake fire, it doesnt put out much heat, but it does take the chill out of the air on cool winter nights.The hawks sit up there and guard the kitchen.. Its so funny...We will be sitting around watching the television then all of a sudden the birds take off like a bullet into the kitchen corner where there is a mouse hole.bubba has two mice so far and whiskey has one.

I used to live in a log cabin in WA, i had a redtail hawk that would sit up on the banister at the top of the log stairway. One time i had some company over and we were all sitting around the fireplace, the upstairs light was turned off so nobody could see the hawk and i didnt bring it up. Out of the darkness above came a stooping hawk and made a mouse kill in the corner of the room!! Great day with a few guests in the field. I went out with a friend from work who had his family from North Carolina out with us.

Firtst Jack up my MHH SIING nailed 100yrds away with a gorgeouse wingover only grab an ass full of Jack bucking bronco!!!!! As I approached for the assist, it pulled him through some brush and busted loose!!! The Tail chase was on and Siing was turning it on after his prey! They went over a rise and I was far too out of gas to see what ensued afterwards. When I crested the peak I found my bird on the ground and no Jack to be seen but there were signs of a struggle with fur and disturbed dirt abound. The spectators were hooked and thought that was the coolest thing ever!!!! Watch out NC falconers you have a new apprentice on his way.

Next few hits just were not as spectacular but Siing did chase a Cotton tail a good distance only to pull fur on the little bugger.

Last field we walked 20 ft and a jack busted cover only to be Tagged 100 ft away!!! We all got to see a nice hit roll tuck and a classic scissor as we approached. This jack was not going anywhere with both of my birds feet wrapped around its nose and mouth!!!

I transfered Siing and was walking back to the vehicles when another Jack busted loose!!! As it took off it kicked up a cotton tail that SIING wiseley pursued but lucky guy made cover. As my friends beat the bushes where the ct made in, I noticed a covey of scale quail make cover a short distance away and thought why not?

I called SIING over and he took a perfect perch on a 30ft sign only 50ft away from were the qauil had put in. when my friends got close I walked straight to the bush I saw 15 or so quail take cover. I smacked and kicked that bush like there was no tomorrow, birds bailed out in all directions!!!

SIING came in full tilt hit his prey then bush and got a nice scaled quail as it was breaking cover!!!

Man what an awesome day!!!

Too bad my NA goshawk did not have much time to catch anything. I flew him last since he was a bit high. Here is a pic of the quail SIINg caught today and a bunny the gos caught a few days ago.

The harris fed up and tomorrow is a full day of hawking with Jiggley Puff!!!

Not the jack from today but you get idea(mouth and nose squeeeze they just do instinctively). It was one from earlier in the season when he did not mind his bell as much and had all his tail feathers

Rich, he's a male Red-necked Falcon (Red-headed Merlin), he's about 150g. He was bred by Bill Meeker and Keith Richman has been flying him, I got him from Keith. He's a very cool little guy, Keith was catching game with him in CA and I hope to get him going in a few days.

A group of ducks tried to come into the creek that evidently did not see the danger She knocked one down and has it on the bank the rest were still intimidated and let us approach for this pic of flushing and swimming ducks with the falcon in the background.

I was coming home from a hunt this morning with the harris hawks when i saw Modoc again, my male redtail that i released over a year ago. He was sitting on a pole in the general are where i usually see him.

I offered him the glove with some quail and whistled..he immeaditly swooped down like he was gonna land but then hovered above the glove for a second then flew back up to the pole.. "pretty awesome i thought to myself".. he still remembers me after all this time.

I got the camera out and snapped some shots of him coming down for some tidbits. He almost jumped to the glove a couple times but just hovered and flew back to his rock perch. What a great way to start off the new year.

Took a few photos of my old hunting buddy today. My GSP, "Flea", is now 17 1/2 years old and still going strong (although a little slower). And no comments on the sweater, he gets cold.

You saw Dekker at the NAFA meet.

He is getting old, you guys don't have the snow to plow thru. I went pheasant hunting with him and Bijou today. Both Dekker and I are SOOO out of shape!!!

I had to help him into the truck when we were done and out of the truck when we got home.

He was worthless in the cattails....he would just follow me around.

He did point the pheasant that we caught tho.

I love this old man....Life will not be the same without him!!!

It's beautiful.. loads of quarry (Cape Francolin- the biggest Francolin and Guinea fowl) The Dams all have ducks and weather is really nice. In addition I know everyone in the region- so my hunting ground was literally 100's square Km's, and the weather is great...the picture is part of our Farm. It borders 'Sanbona', that should give you an idea of what's there and where "there" is. It's alittle like the western desert, just more animals.

well, i have not posted a pic or two in a while. so, here is a couple from today. i hawked a new spot thats loaded up with bunnies and squirrels. in the 1st pic, CB hit/snag'd this big buck squirrel from the side of a tree and proceed'd to slide out about 10' onto a frozen pond. it took a little doin', but i managed to get her and the squirrel back to the ponds edge and stay dry too!!the second pic is the take for today's hunt.

Bryant, i was in a rut like this for about the last 10-12 days. i went to spots that i KNOW are holding game and i couldn't have bought a damn squirrel or bunny. i have been slowly coming out of the rut and the last 2 days have been VERY productive for me. i am looking forward to the rest of the week as it is suppose to warm up a bit and the winds are suppose be rather mild too.......should be a good time to chase some game....

Some shots of Doc's hunt on Sunday. After this freeze we have had a hard time finding snipe. This hunt, he waited on for 10 min before we found the first (and only) snipe.

He had a great pitch and stooped the snipe into the only cover in the field. He missed it on the ground and they took to the sky. Doc tailed the snipe into the wind, climbing up to 300'. They zig zagged across the field heading north for almost 1/2 mile, I could just see them in my binos.

They turned downwind and flew all the way back past us and doc stooped the snipe to the ground. The flight was over 5min long and probably covered close to 2 miles. He was on the ground for a while as we ran to the truck and started to drive to him but he missed it or was bumped off and we saw him flying again. He flew back overhead and was called down. It was quite a flight.
