Western Sporting's Custom-made Twist-type Grommet Setter

We contracted with a high-end machine shop to engineer these grommet setters especially for us. The grommets chosen for these setters are commonly available so there will never be a problem acquiring the correct type. They close the grommets easily, evenly and quickly. The grommet used for this twist-type setter also work in our vise-grip setters—two setter for you individual needs with one brand of grommets.

The setter is precisely engineered to work with these particular grommets.

The grommet setter comes bundled with a set of 25 free grommets but you can also purchase a gross (144) at a reasonable price. Be sure to order extra grommets if you have several hawks to get jessed-up. Add them here in 25’s when purchasing the setter or order separately below in 144’s. See item FE5127 below.

Sizes Available:

Small / Grommet Size 00 (3/16"): Suitable for kestrel, Merlin, sharp-shinned hawk, or similar sized hawk.

Medium / Grommet Size 0 (1/4"): Suitable for Coopers' hawk, Barbary falcon, male hybrid falcon, male Harris', small female peregrine, or similar sized hawk.

Large / Grommet Size 1 (5/16"): Suitable for large female peregrine, male red-tailed hawk, female Harris' hawk, female goshawk, gyrfalcon, male ferruginous hawk, or similar sized hawk.

XLarge Size / Grommet Size 2 (3/8"): Suitable for female ferruginous hawk, female red-tailed hawk, and other large sized hawks.

Eagle Size / Grommet Size 3 (7/16"): Suitable for eagles.

Hint: After cutting the leather anklets, glue the male and female grommet pieces in place on the anklet with a small drop of contact cement. Also, put a small dab of contact cement on the inside of the leather anklets so they stay together when placed around the hawk’s legs. Then, simply clamp the grommets and complete the process. Minimal fuss for you and less stress for your hawk!

I have two twist type. I love them (size 2 for my eagle and eagle owl and the size 1 for general stuff. I am able to change the grommets on both the eagle and eagle owl while sitting in their transport boxes. Just did it this past week. They did not get over stressed and were changed out with new anklets while standing in their vari-kennels.

I got my set in the mail yesterday. Will be using them on my upcoming brancher prairie in a few weeks (I hope!).

Hi Kitty (and Brian),

You should see the machine these are made on--it is one of those computer controlled million dollar wonders. It took a long time to get these twist-type setters working and the CNC shop with that high-end lathe really didn't want to know us as they did very profitable stuff for the oil and gas industry. Well, the economy is down and we finally got them to get these done. They work great! However, ours are engineered to fit our grommets so when it is time to order again go to your friendliest falconry supply shop-Western Sporting.

Put a drap of WD40 or even jesse grease down in the gutter of the male portion of the setter and the grommets roll around very sweet. It is important for the larger sizes as there is more metal to bend but the smaller sizes really don't need it.

We are also less expensive than the other guys--no surprise there.

For anything that the birds may ingest, I use olive oil for the lubricant on metal parts. Found it very workable, and on my parrot cages, and hawk scales, the olive oil is a safe alternative to petroleum based lubricants.
