Not a classic "dog on point" shot, but here's Big Fat Lou basking in the light of success after he barked so much the squirrel fell dead out of the tree and my hawk jumped on it.

He's a Jack Russel but with extra-long legs, lol! Both parents are (supposedly) pure JRT's, but I don't have any papers for him. He's right around 15#.

My sponsor bought one of this dog's sisters, and she had much shorter legs.

Nice looking dog.looks like a little treeing machine.

He's a great dog for chasing squirrels and rabbits. He doesn't really "help" the hawk, as much as compete with her though. He tries his best to catch the critters himself, but seldom ends up beating the bird to the punch.

The few times he's gotten a hold of a squirrel or rabbit, the RT just slams the part that isn't in his mouth and rips it away as her momentum drives her past... At that point, he promply forgets all about that particular critter and looks for another... He once thought he could sneak a taste of a previous RT's lure, and has since decided that what the bird has is the unquestioned property of the bird!

He doesn't use his nose much, but relies almost exclusively on sight. He also hunts silently, and only barks/yips when he sees a critter. That's nice for me, and the birds quickly learn what that means, but of course it lessens his chance of catching something himself (which I like).

Unfortunately, I couldn't hunt with him much last year. The first RT I flew would leave him alone for maybe 10 minutes, and then she'd go after him with deadly intent. I hoped she'd quit, but after one particularly prickly experience, I decided enough was enough, and left him home. Then, my RT started going after my German SH, so I ended up transferring her to someone who hunted without dogs. I hunt some urban areas, and that bird always scared me in those situations. Too much chance of her seeing someone with a little dog on a string...

I was going to trap a new bird, but then found out a local falconer had a still-in-training bird and a severe shortage of falconry time. I took that bird (and love it!). But as soon as she saw the little JRT she was bating off my fist at him! First hunt was more of the same, so unwilling to play that game, I left Tucker at home for the rest of the season. This bird hunts great over my GSH though...

Love those photos of Percy (?). Those are classic. Hard to take photos like that when you're hunting. Someone knew what they were doing, had a good lens and a fast motor drive...and a little luck.

Well, not much action... yet, but in another 6 weeks, she will be home with me and be working every day!

I wish I could have got a pup from an earlier litter, but she will still be prime for learning through out the hunting season this year.

She is considered "white and orange" instead of "orange and white" because of the percentages of color to white. She is one of 4 females out of a litter of 8 puppies. There were 4 orange and white (two males, two females) and 4 tri-color (two males, two females).

This will be my second Brittney, my last living to the age of 14.

After searching all over Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Pennsylvania and being a few days behind in getting a deposit down on a puppy a number of times over, I find a guy that has been breeding and hunting Brittneys for about 15 years just 6 miles from my house! dohh

Can't wait to get her home!

Ahhh... there you go again my friend, being all positive and full of compassion.

We had a bassett hound with similar issues, my former 135 pound German shepherd had horrible hip problems, but you know what, someone will have those dogs, why not me and my family. I would not change anything when it comes to those dogs. They are a true companion with unconditional love.

Yeah, you guessed it, I am a sucker. But hey, I have a great friend now that will hook me up with anything I need for my animals, right Krys????

Vizsla? I hunted behind one for years...incredible dog.

There were several falconers in Missouri hunting with vizlas several years ago. An advantage for them was since everybody's dog looked the same the hawks didn't mind someone elses dog working.

Bryan, yes that is blood. She goes through the thorn bushes we have around here and just about every time out she comes back with a bloody tail. She has really gotten good at pointing rabbits in the last couple of seasons. Her back ground is Millers Silver Bullet and Spect'ra Sam. I have her mother and Reba was the pick of the litter when she was born. The stud dog owner kept her for a couple of years and gun hunted quail with her. He ended up having a brain anuerism and died, so, his wife called and asked me if I would take Reba back. That was about 5 years ago. Excellent dog in the field.

Nice looking pup Mike,
Details? where from etc.

Thanks, Ross.

She is a wirehaired pointing griffon from a small kennel in western NY called Marshoy. I picked her up this past Saturday at 10 weeks old. I'd have liked to have gotten her earlier, but I was out of the country for vacation for the past 2 weeks, so I saw no point in picking her up then immediately dumping her at a kennel for two weeks.

Anyway, both the parents are NAVHDA dogs from decent lines, etc. The wife wanted the puppy so I went with what was available. So far, so good. She seems smart enough, knows her name, already understands "come", makes it through the night and day with no accidents, and is very social both with other people and with other dogs. She's briefly pointed and chased some chipmunks, then found their burrow and attempted to dig it up while I wasnt watching, so its seems as though she has the drive. We will start on "woah" this weekend. All-in-all she seems like shell be a good companion dog for the missus and hopefully a good hunting dog for me.

I know it probably aint a good idea getting a new puppy just as I am getting into falconry, but...well...happy wife, happy life, right? Im excitedly optimistic. :D

Gary,

She will tree squirrels and keep them moving on the ground. She will also locate them when they do not get up into the trees. In my area this time of year the squirrels are spending most of their time on the ground, hiding in brush piles and the like. Xara helps me find them and trees them. Coons? not so much. I had high hopes for her, but she has turned out to be a good bit softer than I thought. She points well and retrieves fairly well, but leaves something to be desired when it comes to critters that are more hardnosed and want to fight. I frequently run ground hogs this time of year with my dachshunds and I had intended to use her as a "finish" dog for them. So far she has been turned around by every ground hog she has encountered. Showing no desire to get in and finish the job the doxies start. Not truly multipurpose even though she is a Deutsche Drahthaar. Smaller game she has no problem with, so I have decided to use her every way that I can in hopes that she will grow up a little and gain some boldness in the process. She is still a young dog and a real looker.

kirklan

How old is she Brian? My DD would literally take on a bear. He has caught and killed 2 coyotes and faced down a charging cow moose with a calf. Just curious as I would think she'd be very sharp on just about anything.

Kirklan she is 10 months old. The only thing she has shown any aggression towards is my birds. That didn't work out well for her. She got her ass kicked. She has turned around and ran from three ground hogs so far. She never engaged any of them, nor was she bitten or dominated by anything. She has yet to present the drive or desire to mess with larger animals.

Brian,

She is pretty young to be getting her butt whupped. I thought she looked young, she should turn it on as she matures. I wouldn't let a coon whup her now for shore, LOL thats too much for a young dog.

Dogs are just different, some mature very early and some late and just because some mature early don't make them the best dogs.

Without trying to tell you what to do , if she were mine I would stick with the squirrels for another year and make sure her confidence is not hurt then start her on bigger game if that is your desire. I wouldn't give up on a baby ten month old dog.

I need to practice what I preach. Chip, my old dog was 9 months old when he was crossing ice flows in icy water retrieving Brant but that is different than a fight, smiles

Gary it was my goshawk that taught her that lesson when she charged in on her on a bowperch. Xara got a nose full of talons. She has never fought or been dominated by anything, dog or critter. She actually charged my goshawk twice. Once on a bowperch and once on a kill. Neither worked out well for her. Her problems of turning off larger game were present before any of that and are still present right now. I plan to wait it out a little, but honestly not too long. This is ground hog season and I need a dog that can help the doxies finish them off. If she can't fill that gap for me, then she is just a pointer....and I aleady have a good pointer.

It was 5 degrees, my face and hands were hurting, bird did not finish eating her pheasant and fluffed up and started squealing. Dog just ran up and down a creek, came out on the snow. Just a winter wonderland when your a Springer. http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa385/rgur54/Redtail/dog1_zpsbc77bb44.jpg http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa385/rgur54/Redtail/dog_zpscbf2ad11.jpg http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa385/rgur54/Redtail/dog2_zps9a26d80e.jpg

Hi Rick,
My English Cocker, Buddy, does the same thing. As long as he is with me, life is just one big ball of fun, whether its hunting, doing chores, riding in the tractor or checking cows. He is 11 now and in the last few years has developed the idea that riding in a dog crate in the back of the pickup is just plain insulting. Somehow he's gotten it into his head that his real place is beside me on the seat, well, sort of, what he really thinks is he should ride with his head on my lap while I'm driving. Since we live in the country and mostly drive where seeing another vehicle is an event, I usually cave on the way home.

Man's best friend, gotta love 'em.

Cockers, Springers, just got to love them. They are enthusiastic and so optimistic. Every where they go, they see birds in their head, and have fun. If they aren't touching you, they feel left out. Unfortunately, it is going to get muddy here soon, once our 2 feet of snow melts, dogs are going to be a mess. Enjoy your buddy, he is getting up there in years. Thanks Bob.

Xara is finally figuring out that she is a killer. We ran this little dude out the other afternoon and after a short fight Xara did her job. Second picture would make Terence proud to know that Loki isn't the only one that rolls around like a goof ball after a kill.:D

Jason she is about 50 pounds. She is still not mature yet. Drahthaars have their tails docked a few days after birth and I chose her for her tight coat. I like a rough coat on a dog but not a shaggy thick coat. Too much trouble to keep looking nice.:D

Thanks Paul...it's probably my favorite hawking spot. A hilltop lek well almost 2 miles off the closest road. It's a beautiful spot to watch the sun rise whether you are hawking or not.

I bet we can both see the same mountains from our respective hawking grounds, in the distance. Can you see Hunt Mountain, above Spearfish, from that field?

Yes, that's Bear Butte. Not sure on Hunt Mountain but you can see a long ways to the west from that spot. Can see Crow Peak but not Inyan Kara.

Did you see any Gyrs over there, this season? It is not unusual for the Birders to post pics of a haggard wintering near the Red Water/Spearfish Creek area. The passagers seem to get pushed up river and most years spend some time close to Sundance.

Saw one haggard female near my hawking area...no immies (maybe that's why the grouse were so damn jumpy after new years). There always seems to be one hanging around the Mchnenny hatchery but never heard any reports this past winter. Way too many eagles. How about you? Do you still have that dark bird you trapped a couple years ago?

No, she didn't get the waiting on thing. I flew her away, close to where I caught her, during the bottom of her second season. She went wild very quickly. She was a beauty but not cut of the right cloth for my style of falconry. I never got her over a couple of hundred feet high, except for when she left.

I did however fly Lox, my 14 year old Passage through the season. She waits on consistantly.
