I got a 48oz Red-Tail that'll do that Fox Squirrel right nice!

I've never seen a squirrel that huge! A couple that were close but not quite that big.

At the NAFA meet in Lebanon, IN, in1979. My 44 oz red-tail started to chase the red fox squirrels there. But got a closer look at them and stopped. I was glad, they are HUGE. As large as a cottontail. WITH TEETH and CLAWS!!!

Most of the Fox Squirrels in the eastern states are protected. Check to see if they are legal quarry.

It is kinda scary, but a lot of fun to hunt squirrels. I always put squirrel chaps on my bird. They really help reduce bites!

Girls got an attitude when it comes to eatin! :D

My sons 34 oz male took a Possume two years ago ... not the size of the

At the alabama meet this year, Jimmy's bird darla (HH) took one a little bigger than that.

I'm with Michael, any squirrel hunting HH would be all over that.

Wow, Kitty! You were at the 1979 NAFA Meet in Lebanon, IN? IFA got the call that if we didn't host it, there wouldn't be a NAFA Meet that year. SO, despite having endured "The Blizzard of '78", a "100 year" storm that destroyed our pheasant population, the IFA said, "OK." We started the tradition of having a "Holidome" type motel as the Meet hotel and told folks to "bring the family" since there was things to do besides hawking. It was a great success. One of the more humorous moments was the manager addressing the group one evening to remind them that the hot tub was closed after 10 pm AND was off limits for the amorous activities that had gone on there in the middle of the previous night . . . . Everyone roared with laughter and looked around to see who might have been that couple. . . . .

And, yes, we DO have some REALLY big fox squirrels in IN. I've picked up road kills that go well over two pounds. These critters are NOT shy about fighting back if grabbed by your hawk. SO a few years ago I gave them this thread's title as their nick name. Kind of the tree version of white tail jacks in their willingness to "face down" a hawk. Definitely need to get a "head hold" to take them w/o getting bit.

Doesn't look that big to me. Any redtail should do the job.

Have any of you that are saying they have big teeth ever handled a dead one? For their size, their teeth are not really any different than a grey squirrel. In fact, if I had to try to subdue one or the other bare handed, I am going for the fox squirrel over a full grown grey. They are much slower than the greys.

My bird this past year encountered one and went after it and even bound to it, but something happened and she let go and it ran straight away from her and she just watched it go and would not hit it again. I called her down, checked her feet and found no bites or blood or anything. I am convinced that the fox squirrels fight more like a monkey than a squirrel. I think they grab on and fight more with their 'paws' or feet and the bird feels the strength and knows it's not just a normal squirrel and freaks out.

Of course, then there are the birds like Jimmy Tompkins' Darla that are outweighed twice and three times over by the fox squirrel and bind to it anyway! :D

Hey Dave,

It's the opposite here. They bite like no other. I'd rather tackle a grey. They're weaker and the bites aren't nearly as bad.

George:
It maybe just my computer but that looks like a gray sqr. not a fox sqr. Our fox sqr. have a lot more red in them. It looks that same as the sqr. Joe B. has on the rock. I do not have a lot of fox sqr.in my area, mostly black and gray.

Joe,

No offense, but the southern fox squirrels (like the one in the pic at the beginning of the thread) go far bigger than the northern ones. Like Ev said, you don't see them up there with the black face etc. The ones in your pic are nice sized, to be sure, but the ones down here really are a sight to behold as far as size goes. I also think the ones you guys have up there are more like a grey in behavior etc.

I agree with Dave, I used to live in Detroit, the only difference with the fox and grey squirrels up there is the size and the rufous color of the chest.

The fox squirrel in the video/picture is more typical of the southeastern US. They (typically) have a white mark on the face around the nose and look almost twice the size of the greys I see around here.

No offense taken but for the record the smallest gray squirrel in those pics weighed 2 pounds. The largest was an ounce below 3 pounds. There is no doubt that a fox can grow bigger but at the end of the day the question was, "Whose bird can hunt down this Fox Squirrel?"

Rich, you are dead on about the Meet print being a Sloan. VERY few of them still exist. It's one of the rarest Meet prints. I'm not sure if it was the first, but it may have been.

It's a fox squirrel! It has a black mask with grey body. The long bushy tail makes it different also than a regular squirrel!!!

fox squirrels at the beach come in all sorts of colors. All black half black all grey xcept black face but they are twice the size of any grey if not 3 times. They walk slow n dont give a shit about most things. The golf courses i hunt have them but my birds wont mess with them. You would probabably need one of those condor x redtails that i have seen pics of!!!!!!:D
