Hello just a quick introduction, I am an Eagle falconer from Scotland and have been flying Eagles for the last 9 years. I am currently flying a male Golden who is in his third season and has acounted for a good number of blue hares . I started falconry in 1975 and have flown a variety of birds over the years.

We are pretty much snowed in at the moment, not sure where the season is going to take us this year. I am keeping Floyd just above his hunting weight on the off chance that the weather will break and we will get out

Welcome John,

We needed a Scot in the mix, and an eagle to boot! Kippers and eggs ! Best breakfast there is. I must have my coffee with it though.

We should look at renaming this forum "North Atlantic Falconers Exchange" ! Wouldn't have to change the initials.
Our best to "Floyd".

Welcome, sir.

Unless doing waiting on flights , the flights are strictly out of the hood, there is no point in the type of terrain we are flying letting the eagle choose its slips. We also fly together at times alternating slips, flying out of the hood makes this more manageable

Managed our first outing on the moor this year, previously not allowed out on the ground because of grouse shooting. Floyd managed to put two blue hares in the bag which was great because his fitness is not quite there yet. Will try to post a couple of pictures later. Should be a good season with a week solid Eagle hawking planned for the second week in December along with another Eagle hawker.

Not to bad mate no thanks, unfort im off shifts, and this means days, so in essence i cant get out much through the week, as you know any hunting bird will have its fitness well compramised, as im mostly flying falcons. atb Col

There is definitely a benefit in working shifts, I turned down a nine to five job because ot that but sometimes it cannot be helped, I am sure it will sort itself out in time

Thats interesting that you are from Scotland. My sponsor lived and hawked in Scotland for a while. Would you mind if I asked you a few questions about Scottish hawking? Im very interested in moving to Scotland (I live in the USA) as I have heard good things about the falconry and the people. Before I rattle off all my questions I ll wait for your permission to ask them.

Thanks,

Cody H.

Hi John,

Looking at your avatar I see a nice looking, wiry dog in the background. Would love to hear about it and if it's a part of your hunting team.

All the best,

That was an old wirehaired German pointer that I bred years ago , she belonged to my brother, she was a fantastic working dog but unfortunately died of old age
she worked with the eagles for years and was invaluable in the field

John

Sorry for not getting back earlier but not on forums that much these days

John,
Were you at the Dundee meet about 6 years ago and I met you there with my friend Gary. (Gary was the one who stole away from the secretary of the Scottish BFC and brought her here to the States.)
I have hawked with Geoff many times and Andrew over there and here with their Eagles.
Got to get back to Scotland soon. I miss the country and the people.
Cheers,

Great... thanks,
Really I'm wondering about the weather. When I asked my sponsor he said it was bad most of the year But what most folks consider bad I consider great e.g. Very Cold, Very Wet, and Very Windy :) Is it like that there?

Is the hawking group active? I emailed them once and never got a response.

What are the regulations like? I know you cant wild trap hawks but is there a min. age and do they do mews inspections?

Whats the typical bird flown there? e.g. in North Carolina USA its the red tail "buzzard" for sure.

Thanks a lot,
Cody Howdeshell

No I wasn't at the meet at Dundee, used to be in the Scottish Hawking club and went to a few of their meets.

Have hawked with Andrew several times but tend to hawk most of the time aay from clubs

Eagle hawking to me is a fairly solitary pursuit over here particularly where we fly as land is at a premium

He's right the weather is generally atrocious , last couple of seasons have been very windy.

The Scottish hawking club is fairly active it might be worth dropping them a line again, they are on Facebook

The most popular flown here seems to be the Harris

no age limits mews inspections , fairly lax to be quite hones
