That's really different! I like the green color though. Looks like it took a lot of time to make this one.

That is awesome. I still think one of you hood gods needs to do a straight forward skeleton hood. Maybe a rabbit skull would be fitting.

    Default Leather

    Hi Ken:

I have a quick question. I am working on redoing my Frier Tuck hood pattern to change it into a accordian back hood. What type of leather do you think or recommend for the accordian leather to be able to get the good even pull?
    Thanks, Keith Denman

Hey Keith , first, great question,, I have my own opinion on what leather(s) work best for Arab Backed hoods. I think the BUM wrap these hoods sometimes get is that they are very soft and not rigid like we in North America like or are used to in a hood. There are many reasons why the hoodmakers and falconers in the Middle East prefer what they prefer and am not going to get into that.
Me, I think Accordion (Arab) backed hoods are a great hood, yes birds can remove them easier than say a Dutch (another KNOCK against the hood) but they still are a very useful style hood. As for pinching the nape feathers?? I am still not convinced OTHER than Golden Eagles that they really are any better than other styles of hoods. Just my opinion,,,
I digress,, I like a hide that is much stiffer than that is traditionally used, I look for depending on the size of the hood of course, a 2-3 oz calf hide BUT is not as rigid and stiff as a hide you would use for say a Dutch hood. Feel it, how does it bend try to bunch the hide like the accordion back ,,How does it fold? If it tucks in nicely and is not super stiff I would get it..
The key and I learned this from Dennis Maynes... the more slots you have in the back to allow the braces in and to tighten the hood the better the hood (Pattern). I have seen as many as 18 slits, slots and as few as 10 and as a hood maker you can really see the difference in the function of the hood in how it closes..
JEEZ, long answer for a good question,, must be the Bud Light, heat and sun..
I ALSO like this style as it provides so much more leather to act as a Canvas for artwork,, I am working on a "Paradise on a Hood" series now for my saker using a modified Ryand Arab Pattern,, again just my opinion and 'Me" being "Me".
    Hope this helps,

    Hi Ken:

Thank you for the answer. It is always great to get your advice. I appreciate it and once I get the pattern made up and possible funcitionable I will let you know. Maybe I will try some more carving on one. Not very good at that. I would love to put my dragon head on one but I do not know enough about dying colors over each other. Maybe I will try it anyway.
