In the US we aren't aloowed to use smart missiles that home in to the head while hawking. Is that a CO2 bottle opener / game dispatcher? I always wonder about trying that

It appears to be some sort of spike to dispatch the prey. Sadly, it is firmly set in the sinuses, far from the brain. The brain is in the middle of an "x" going from right ear to left eye, and left ear to right eye. Or it could be hit by entering behind an eye toward the opposite ear... But not that way.

Thanks Katy, she caught many more and large males at that, but this one is special as it was her very first, and her second catch.

Andy, the Common grackle is not related to crows, it belongs to the Icteridae family, with the Orioles, American blackbirds, cowbirds, and many others. Ths one is a young female, but you should look up for pictures of mature males, they are splendid birds.

Andy, thanks for the great photoed introduction. I couldn't help but notice that your Goshawk has red eyes. I thought this was a trait mainly limited to the North American version. How common are red eyes in German Goshawks?

Oh... we hunt. You won't need to look very far for all the gore that you want.

She wasn't as high as I would have liked, she was upwind, I was prepared to let her run out farther in hopes for more altitude.
The next time I looked her direction, she was in a shallow crosswind stoop. Figured I had bumped something, but saw nothing in front of me. About that time I watched as the goose cleared a hedgerow and she went vertical. She came in behind and bound to it, upending it and then disappearing behind the cover. Prints in the snow showed it took a while to get control of it.
