Default Raptors in Captivity: Guidelines for care and Management

Does anybody have this book, or read it? I have specific questions related to this book.

Well that is the million dollar question. I still have yet to get my hands on this book. Wife thinks she has it someplace.

My understanding is the only break it down by Eagles, Screech owls and Kestrels, and all others.

LOL! Species discussed include the "Steady Six" - Kestrel, Eastern Screech Owl, GHO, Northern Saw-whet Owl, Western Screech Owl, and RTH; accipiters, buteos, caracara, eagles, falcons, harriers, kites, osprey, owls, parabuteo and vultures.

Housing is covered in Chapter 4 - Pg 75 through 108 inclusive! Covers location, security, structure, predator control, furniture, customizing, tethering, enrichment, sanitation, common injuries associated with inadequate housing (GREAT section), and a summary with suggested readings.

That's why I was trying to narrow down what you were asking for.

Appendix C is real interesting, "Raptor Housing", and includes photos from major raptor centers from all over the country. Shows construction ideas and perch set ups, etc.

Would you recommend this book to a pre apprentice?
Or should I use the $ and buy a different book(s)?

Hey Eric, I don't know about a pre-apprentice or even the use for falconry as this book is geared more towards the education and general husbandry of raptors not flying/hunting with them. That being said it is a very good book and I would definitely recommend reading it. There is a lot of great information in there. Only catch is that it is pretty expensive. Luckily my copy was a gift. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to afford it.

Not sure what your intent for the guidelines, Mario, but in the past, Lori has been adamant that the guidelines were for non-releasable (injured) education birds and not falconry birds. This was mainly to tell officials that they should not use the book to create regulations or decisions about falconry bird care.

At least this was the case with the older, paper cover editions so I don't know if her sentiment is still the same. I have not had the chance to read this new version.

Eric I wouldn't snub it out right. There is a lot of good information on health and disease and what not that does apply to the husbandry side of falconry. It is geared more towards rehab and education programs, but there is still good information to be had.
