    Default Hello!

I'm from Long Island, NY, Western Suffolk County
as I write this, there's an Osprey making a fuss outside. I'm amazed, that living in a fairly built up, and busy area, (35 miles east of NYC) we have the rare visit from an Owl in the cooler months, and this recent (a few weeks now) resident Osprey.
I'm new, needing to study and apply, for permit, and looking forward to learning a lot here.

    thanks!
    Kevin

I lived in Port Jeff and Islip. It's an interesting area. Salt marshes on the north shore etc. You'll notice all kinds of wildlife you never noticed before once you're looking for it.

Good luck, and have fun. I found a book at the local library on falconry.
It was a great place to start, without spending any money.

the bird I thought was an Osprey, is a passage Red Tail Hawk,

I was going by the audio clips provided on
    http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/osprey/sounds,

I think the sample they have "calls" was joined or mislabeled.

anyway, the interest and curiosity about this very young bird calling for mama to feed him/her was what got me interested in falconry

I've also been fortunate to get a position, volunteering a few hours a week at a wildlife hospital that houses 9 unreleasable raptors.

I'm still having a hard time finding information about the next local
    "Long Island Falconry" meeting too.

Welcome! There's quite a few falconers in your neck of the woods out there on LI. Good luck on your endeavor.
