Peregrine Club of Philadelphia Winter Meet - Jan. 2 & 3 - Morgantown, PA

Though this is short notice, it is with great pleasure that the Peregrine Club of Philadelphia is pleased to announce an invitation to falconers near and far to attend our Annual Meet. This is the 2nd Annual Meet since the reconstitution of the club in 2013. After the success of the meet last year, it is an event we would like to share with as many falconers as possible. Last year we enjoyed the company of falconers from neighboring states and we hope to extend the reach of our invitation even further.

The meet will be held on January 2nd and 3rd and should be a great way to start off the new year. Registration and our central meeting place will be at the Holiday Inn in Morgantown at 6170 Morgantown Road, Morgantown, PA 19543. The hotel is, of course, dog and bird friendly. They have also offered a group rate of $89 per night for those attending the meet.


There will be a dinner banquet and a raffle held at the hotel on Saturday evening (the 3rd). We are honored to have Leonard Donato, VMD as our guest speaker. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Avian Practice. The banquet will be $30 per person.


Meet registration is free to club members and $35 to non-members. Registration for the meet and banquet will be open in the next couple days via our website (www.peregrineclubofphiladelphia.org) or apply for membership ($25 yearly) and have the fee waived. We will update this announcement as once registration is open. To be clear, the meet and banquet are separate fees.


Please RSVP for the banquet no later than 12/15 so that we can have an accurate head count.



If you are interested in flying on stocked pheasant or chukar email admin@peregrineclubofphiladelphia.org as we need some idea of a head count and will have to coordinate the cost of game birds.


In regards to wild game, the meet is located within 5 miles of about 10,000 acres of state-owned hunting lands - State Game Land 43 and 52 as well as over 6,000 acres of French Creek State Park that are open to hunting where squirrel, rabbit, and pheasant should be available. There are also many farms nearby where falconers would be able to ask permission. SGL 43 has also been stocked with pheasant by the PA Game Commission.


Pennsylvania falconers have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming months. With nearly two years of effort and collaboration with the Board of Game Commissioners on the books, a wild peregrine take is finally slated for next season. This will be a memorable outing with high spirits as we celebrate this exciting development in PA falconry.

The cut-off for registering for the banquet has been extended to Dec. 20, so please make sure to register via our website (www.peregrineclubofphiladelphia.org) by Saturday of this week.

Also, We have invited the key Pennsylvania Game Commissioner that helped make the Peregrine Take happen in PA and hope to have an open Q&A opportunity for all banquet attendees.

The Game Commissioner is confirmed and is looking forward to sharing the process PA went through to get a Peregrine take.

The PA Game Commission is stocking the game lands in the area with some 230 Pheasants this weekend, so hopefully there will be plenty left-overs for the meet.

We have been in contact with Geoff Nye, son of Alva Nye one of our club founders.

He is delighted that his fathers club, the Peregrine Club of Philadelphia achieved a passage peregrine take in PA. I invited him to our celebration and to hear the PA Commissioner talk about all of the work that went into making it happen. He’s making adjustments to his January 3rd schedule to attend.
We are truly completing the circle. When Alva Nye was still a student at the University of Pennsylvania in 1933, he co-founded our club with Bob Stabler, a club that went on to include more than a few falconers who left their mark on falconry. Many of those club members were students at Penn and took falconry with them when they finished their educations. For that reason, the club has a very different foundation than most. The PCP held the first national field meet in the U.S. According to a NAFA article published in 1976, Pennsylvania History of Falconry, PA falconry began in 1933 with Alva Nye, Bob Stabler and a few years later, Jim Rice. The Nye family witnessed the pre-regulatory days of falconry in PA, the decline of the eastern anatum peregrine, the introduction and overreach of federal and state regulations, the re-constitution of the first falconry club in the united states and our work that achieved a passage peregrine take in PA – WOW! Geoff is excited and plans to be there. You should too.
As you can see, this is already morphing into much more than just another meet. This is one you will remember.

Just received this pic via e-mail from Sean Y. of my Gos on a Pheasant. This was the first of 2 pheasants taken. The second flight was even better and went for over 300+ yards.
