Hi from Wichita, Kansas!

My name is Matt and I am an aspiring falconer from Kansas. I have always been a very big outdoorsman and traveler, and I feel that I am ready for the lifelong challenge of hunting with a falcon.
A little about myself, I am an Army Veteran and first responder of 12 years now and I recently started my own publishing franchise as well. I have 3 kids and a wife who support all of my dreams and make life worth any of the crap that comes with it. I would love to become a falconer to have a rare skill/privilege that I can pass down to them.

Ps. I have a cabin in Western Kansas surrounded by pristine hunting (pheasant, quail, rabbit, deer, coyote) that would become a hunting staple for me and a good place for meets

Welcome! I'm surprised to hear that game populations are thriving in your area, I haven't heard any good news in that respect in a long time. First rule of falconry: If you have good game populations keep it to yourself, that last thing that you, and the other local falconers want are crowds of non-locals flooding your fields. Oh, and sign your posts, you can setup a signature in the settings.

Luckily I am the only hunter that can use certain areas around the cabin, but there is quite a bit of public land that is mildly hunted. And thanks for the tip, I have it set up now.

I actually got ahold of them last evening! I was told to build a 10x10x10 mew before they would sponsor
, so I am trying to figure that out now.

Another traditional size for a mews is 8' x 8'. It comes directly from using 4' x 8' sheet lumber. The other thought is putting the framing on the outside so the interior is smooth. Three sheets of lumber added on one side gives a doble door/tack room function.

This site is a trove of ideas, some better than others. See the Mews Picture thread under the Facilities/Mews/Equipment section.

Two things I would suggest is to attach the weathering yard to the mews with the mews entrance through the weathering yard. This functions as a double door for the mews in case the bird somehow gets loose in the mews.

Second is to have the perch at a height so the hawk's eyes are the same level as yours. Passage birds especially do not like to be on the ground when you enter the space.

For those who are new to Kansas, don't forget to research Kansas Walk-in Hunting Atlas. I live in Reno county and the last time I checked there were 8,000 acres available to hunt. There are 100s of thousands of acres available in Kansas. Farmers get paid by the state to allow the public to come in and hunt. Most of this year's property will expire on Jan 31. Some stay available until turkey season is over. Also, some Kansas waters allow hunting around the lakes.
