Answer: Because the shipping box is over sized, UPS applies what they call dimensional weighting, and the freight is calculated on the basis of 38 lbs.

So what does just the bath pan weigh? I understand shipping calculation, just wondering how heavy that pan is.

Bath pan weighs right about 5 lbs, actual shipping weight inside of box is 10 pounds, but it is oversize which kicks in so dimensional weighing takes over. They are very good bath pans.
