Bound with LATHAM'S New and Second Book Of FAULCONRY: Concerning the ordering and training up of all such Hawks as where omitted or unmentioned in his printed book of the Haggard Faulcon and Ger-Faulcon, namely the Goshawk and Tassel, with the Sparhawk, the Lanner, and Lanneret, as they are divided in their generation: the Hoby and Meryln in their kinde: Teaching approved Medicines for all such infirmities and diseases as are incident to them. Published for the delight of...Faulconers. London Printed by S. Griffin, for William Lee, and are to be sold at the Turks head in Fleet-street, 1661.e pp. [xxiii], 144, (6).The later editions of Symon Latham are all considered to be rare. This 1661 printing is unique. There are no other recorded copies of this book known to exist. The bibliographies consulted were Lowndes and Hazlitt, Harting, and Wing. They give reference to editions printed in 1658 and 1662. The British Museum, Beinecke Rare Book Library, Henry E. Huntington Library, nor the Library of Congress do not own a copy of this 1661 edition in their respective collections. These two volumes, bound as one, are similar to the previous works by Latham in that they contain separate title pages, signatures and pagination. A third volume THE WHOLE WORK OF MR. LATHAM'S BOOKS OF FAULCONRY, As he perfected them some years before his Death: Whereto is Added this year 1661 an Excellent Treatise called THE GENTLEMANS EXERCISE Supplying what was omitted by that worthy Author Mr. Latham, with long Experience hath made known to this late Age : with the terms used in Faulconry. And a Complete Alphabetical Table. London Printed by Sarah Griffin for William Lee and are to be sold at the sign of the Turkshead in Fleetstreet, 1661 was issued for binding if required with the first two; it is not in the present copy, but the title page is inserted at the front portion of this book. THE GENTLEMAN'S EXERCISE .. 1662 was really written by Anthony Hammond. (Wing STC 491A). {Note: As an extra benefit, there is a facsimile of Hammond’s book, thoughtfully provided by B. Peter Devers and Natalie Nicholson, included with this 1661 edition. The Beinecke Library, Yale University allowed Peter to produce this facsimile. Only twenty of these being printed.}The provenance of the volume can be traced back to Dodgson Hamilton Madden. His splendid bookplate is affixed on the inside front cover. He was the author of CHAPTER OF MEDIEVAL HISTORY and A DIARY OF MASTER WILLIAM SILENCE. Both of which contain extensive references to falconry. Madden was King’s Magistrate to Ireland during the early part of the 20th century. Physically, this 1661 edition of LATHAM'S FAULCONRY is in exquisite shape. The pages are crisp and bright. The custom binding is full calf with raised bands and gold lettering on the spine. It was bound by Birdsall of Northampton, probably during the 1880's or 1890's. The size of this book is 9.5 x 15.2 cm. (3 3/4 x 6 in.). Stunning! No other copy known. Truly a singular book.................... Price $32,000

Lodge was primarily known for his early photographs of birds in their natural setting. The decorated cover shows the author carrying over his shoulder a dead Black Vulture which he has just bagged. Bound in a full leather custom red binding. Atlas folio. (63.5 cm. in height). Contains the pictorial; detailed title page, 2 plates of hawking scenes at the Loo; 2 colored plates of trappings and furniture, plus 12 hand colored plates by Joseph Wolf of hawks and falcons. All were done on lithographic stones, and include the most famous falconry icon of a White Gyrfalcon on the Gloved Fist (“Le Gröenlandais, Faucon Blanc Mue”). Schwerdt states, “The life-size illustrations are by far the finest ever produced in any book on falconry.” Daniel G. Elliott says, “To my friend Joseph Wolf, Esq., whose unrivaled talent and whose marvelous powers of delineating animal life render him unequaled in our time.” The text is worthy (even today) of close study by every falconer. Harting 194. As usual, there is some foxing in both the text and plates, but, nothing really obtrusive. Overall, an acceptable, discriminating collector’s example. A recent census estimates that there are less than 70 traceable copies of this book. From any falconer’s standpoint, it is truly special to own one. Right now, a bottle of 50 year old whiskey (Glenfiddich), in 500 hand-blown, numbered bottles is selling for $16,000 as an investment. Not a wee drop dare be tasted! A current trend for the sale of TRAITÉ DE FAUCONNERIE is over $100,000. Why not possess something desirable with real headiness to it? This rare book at a bargain price, the value of which will only increase. Price $65,000

First edition, limited to 300 copies, signed by Schwerdt. Volume I has been professionally rebacked. The other three volumes are worn, and each should have some restoration done on them. The contents are all in fine condition. This set belonged to Bradley Martin, the eminent American collector, and contains his bookplate in each volume. Schwerdt eloquently states his particular passion: "Collecting on one definite subject ...requires great patience and a considerable amount of energy. I am not joking when I suggest that it is in itself a kind of chase, comparable to hunting and stalking, and partakes of its pleasures... The book was the quarry. What joy when it was obtained in the end! One felt like blowing the horn."
