Default From New York

Hello, my name is Hal and I am from Dutchess County in New York. I am very interested in falconry but I would like to get to know the ins and out of every aspect I would need to know to be able to take care of such a magnificant creature such as a Red Tail Hawk, possibly even a smaller bird due to living area. So I suppose what I am doing really is looking for someone in my area who could take me under their wing ( no pun intended or was it? ) to show me the ins and outs before I decide to actually apply for my liscence for apprenticeship. What I mean by this is I am look in for someone who could coach me as a spectator for about a year help me learn properly to ensure I am confident enough to actually be a Falconer. Basically I would be going thru a 3 year apprenticeship if I do feel confident in myself with such great responsibilty at the end of the first year.

Welcome to NAFEX and falconry. One little rule of the forum is to post with your first name. You can change this by modifying your User CP at the top left section.

Sounds like you should go to a NY falconer's meet and introduce yourself and your goals to local falconers. You can find out more about that and other newcomer's info at http://www.lifalconry.com/nysfws/stateindex.html

Sorry to confuse. You need to have it in a signature line, which can be edited in the User CP section. That way, everyone knows your name from each post that you make.

Hi Hal,

Your best bet is to contact:

NYSDEC
Special Licenses Unit
625 Broadway
Albany, NY 12233-4752
518-402-8985

Ask for a falconry apprentice package. It should include a list of all NYS Falconers by area. Then start calling falconers that are near by and ask about tagging along. You may need to leave a message, they do not answer the phone most of the time. If you go on the DEC web site there might be an email address also. Good luck

Default Okay thank you for the information ...

I had another thread about how I felt they were rude to me at NYSDEC but cant find it maybe DEC is NAFEX? Just kidding but I wanted to thank everyone who said to call and be a polite nusaunce because it has paid off.I guess the operator was tired of having to answer my calls she gave me the direct line number to them and transferred me only when someone had answered....WINNING... So long story short they sent me my packet hopefully this past afternoon. So once again thank you to those who encouraged me to be a polite buzz on the phone line.....

Hal,

I'll second your opinion on the NY state "Special License" dept.

Today the mail arrived and in the mail should arrive but an orange envelope the size of a book.I look at it and what do i read ? NYDEC has sent me my packet and by the look of things they send the study guide with it. No more calls for things till I have to now. Also I didnt relize in my county alone there is 7 falconers on the list.I am actually pretty glad there is that may in my county alone.I even found a master in my own town, I believe he will be my first call then I will also contact the rest so that I can have multiple opinions.Be cause as I have read the other threads on here I have noticed a pattern.Take as much knowledge as possible from as many places as possible.

Also Tom NYSDEC may not be bad all the time. I may have just gotten the one guy the one time when he was upset about something. Also they do tend to try and weed out those who will give up quickly I think maybe that is why it took so many calls.

Gotcha Hal,

I must have called the 4 times the guy was in the bathroom. Email hasn't worked either, maybe the electricity is off. I hear they are having budget problems.

Have a great day and enjoy your quest.
