I had the pleasure to attend the WFA picnic yesterday. It was in Fall City, east of Seattle. It was a two and a half hour trip from Lynden where I live but a beautiful drive. Two of my sons went as well. We got there right before 11:00 am so I could enter a piece of my art for the auction. I am a pre apprentice. I have a sponsor, and have passed my test, but am still building my mews. I was hoping to pick up a hood and maybe a vest to complete my equipment at the auction. The first person I met was Ron Tuttle. I believe he is the state treasurer, not sure. What a prince of a guy. Made us feel welcome right away. There was about 20 some birds there. One Golden eagle, a Great Horned owl, one Redtail, a few Harris hawks, A couple of young Goshawks and a bunch of falcons. My favorites being a Aplomado and a beautiful Black Goshawk. I was very impressed at how well the picnic was ran and how friendly the folks were. I met some real nice people who were very willing to answer questions for a newbie. My two sons were blown away with all the birds. I think I have sparked a falconry flame in both of them. There was a ton of food and it was all delicious. The gentleman who ran the grill did a great job. I had a great time at the auction as well. It was alot of fun and had a lot of great items. I was able to pick up a BC trap and a hood. The auctioneer was a new apprentice by the name of Bob. I dont remember his last name. He made the auction alot of fun and kept it rolling along smoothly. All in all it was a great time. I was a little apprehensive about meeting a bunch of falconers at first, but that was quickly put aside. What a good group of folks. I look forward to the meet in November.

Thanks for sharing, but, there is a long standing tradition on NAFEX. Without pictures, it did not happen!

Download the Photobucket app, upload all of them to Photobucket, click on IMG tag and paste the tag into a post on this thread. Easy Peasy!

My fiancee and I snapped some nice pictures as well, but sadly he took his phone with him to work today - go figure! I'll try to steal it when he gets home tonight and upload some more. He loved the owl so we have lots of him, and a video of the downy Gyr faceplanting a few times while trying to walk around in his pen. :D

Hi Bart.

I am glad you had a good time. Ron pointed you out to me, and there were several times I tried to make it over to introduce myself, but as I was the "conductor" of the event kept getting drawn asside before I could.

Ron is the WFA Vice President, BTW.

Those were some nice photos you took - I sent you a PM with my email address, I'd love to include some picnic photos on one of the upcoming newsletters.

No, that is not Brian's eagle. This one has actually caught game. That one is a rehab - falconer collaboration, and being handled by a guy named Mark (herd???). Mark is an amazing, gung ho falconer.

Funny, when you meantioned Black Goshawk I perked up, because somehow I missed seeing the black goshawk that was there. :D

There wasnt one there though. I Steve Layman lost his at the end of last season, although its still showing up around his place periodically, just not when he is home to call it in.

That leaves my female as the only one in captivity in the lower 48. Hope someone takes more soon - but they are really tough to find.

I was hoping to finally meet you on Saturday... The weather was pretty touch and go for a while, but it did end up being nice by the time we got the auction started.

We had a nice memorial set up for Doug as well. His widow was very touched by it.

I thought about Doug. I'm so glad the WFA had something for him and that his wife was able to attend. I know it was a sad day though. That looming over the meeting.

We would not have been there until 3 so I called it off. Part of attending is the auction and lunch :). Pool man's summer work is never done.

We will meet eventually Geoff. Hopefully at the fall meet Doc will be flying strong and we can get out and do some hawking together.

Cheers to Doug!!

All the best

Ya, cheers to Doug.

He is the last one who would want to see any sad faces on his account. I suspected that to be the case, but his widow confirmed it when I spoke to her on Saturday.

Mark (Hurd) is a good friend of mine. He's a great guy and very gung ho. We hunted together in Kansas last year and had a great time. He and another Washington falconer (Steve) were flying male HH's that were pure death on bunnies. And he had the eagles. You won't see many apprentices take game with an eagle. He did it with a young imprint that had never taken anything before. The bird continually improved as the week went on. My one eyed and crippled RT supplied several baggy jacks for him, and at the end of the week, the GE caught it's first on it's own. Mark has some good days ahead of him with eagles.

I have never seen his name spelled - thanks for the fix. I knew what it was phonetically... :D

Steve is a good friend of mine and a great guy. I havent had that pleasure of seeing Mark in the field yet, but based on the caliber of people who are hanging out with him and talking him up, I know it will be a treat when I do. This is also confirmed by the caliber of people who avoid him and talk bitterly about him because of their jealousy.

It wasnt fair to her to bring her.

I had my kids asking me to take her, and a new apprentice I am working with wanted to carry her around for the day.

But she was busy dealing with some sexual frustration because I didnt have a tiercel linned up this year and didnt bother to court her. She would have been unfair company. :D

I thought I had some photos of her online somewhere, but I cant find them. I'll post some when I get a chance...

Well, next time just interupt. ;)

I try to make it out hunting with your sponsor at least once a year, so there is another good chance to meet. Time in the field is always more relaxed.
