I am sure many of you know I am a huge John Moran fan. Over the next few weeks I want to share some photos of his hoods. Many are my favourites. I have 51 in my collection and can only wish I had more of these.
Many were made in the early 70's late 80's , in my opinion the best ever!

Beautiful hoods Ken, can you still find them for sale?

Hey Chris, John makes the Dazzler and Dazzler Deluxe hoods a few times a year and puts them on e-bay. Usually he has simpler hoods for sale but a few hood collectors have been selling some of their Moran hoods on e-bay.
If anyone is interested in a Moran hood keep an eye on e-bay or contact me.

Here are a few photos of some the artwork John did INSIDE some of his hoods. I have 4-5 of John's hoods with painting on the inside. I believe I have the last one John ever did with a painting inside, I rememeber him saying I am not doing them anymore. Dakota other than the one photo these are not hoods from my collection, I have I think 10 Dazzlers and deluxe Dazzlers but I have no photos of them handy. I do a few hoods with paintings on the inside but alas my artwork is nowhere the works of art Johns are.

Ken,

Share with us the background on how and when you started collecting John's hoods. 51 hoods is an amazing number for anyone's collection, but to have 51 from a specific maker like John is especially so.
The cool thing is that they're mostly, if not all, from the John's era.

I have over 200 hoods in my collection, I have been collecting Johns hoods for about 7 years. I have many of John's most recent Dazzlers and have picked 2 up from David Wadsworth and several from Steve Duffy . I am back collecting John's hoods so I hope to get to 75.
I also have 12 Clayton Smith Hoods, 10 Gene Johnson and 5 Ron Rollins hoods . I have one from Ron with a painting of a saker on the inside custom made for me. There is another great hood maker.
When I go from this earth all my Moran Hoods, in fact all my hoods will be donated to the Archives for all to see.

The hood with the wood ducks on it is my all time favorite Moran hood. I have several of John's hoods as well. I met with him in May of this year and bought from him the Dazzler he made for one of his current falcon's "Lealu". The hood, according to John, was inspired by the comet "Kohoutek" that he witnessed in the sky back in 1973. He says that "Lealu" comes across the sky and strikes her quarry like a comet! John is about as layed back and nice a guy as you'll ever meet. Truly a pioneer in modern day hood making with a style that is often imitated but NEVER duplicated.

Hi Ken,

Many of those shown here I remember from the video. Others must have been in Steve Duffy's collection and I have not seen them before. Two of the Arab hoods shown in this thread, have the same shape as the one I have. The latest of his Arab style are very different. I would like to know the years these particular Arab hoods we made. He completely changed the original Arab pattern to make what I consider a better shape. The one I have when tried on a haggard female Peales, slipped on perfectly and as the falcons shook her head it only went on better. When braces were closed, the fit was perfect.

Thanks for showing these.

Hello Dan, I have an Arab Hood John made me about 2 years ago, the style is very similar to the ones in the photos, I will ask John, I think the blue one was made in the late 70's .We talked about that hood awhile back. Here are some more. There is a hood with featherd plumes,, John did not make many, I have one but the one in the picture I think was just Sold on e.bay.

Thanks JR, remember when he was in full swing making hoods the average hood sold for 10-25.00 he was getting 100.00 for his hoods he was so far ahead of the others and I am NOT taking anything away from the others at the time, they were all outstanding hood makers but what John was doing was unheard of.. I have my own thoughts on stitching but will keeps those to myself..

I cannot remain silent any longer.

I was with John last fri. Tried a few slips at ducks and then pheasant. We both thought his peregrine was fussing at a stranger (me) being with. Anyway we got back to John's place and he invited me in. His workbench is near the door in his modest home. If I didn't know John, I would have looked at that workbench and assumed it had been vandalized.
Some artisans' work areas are neat and some are not. I do know that just because it looked messy to me, I can very safely assume that John knew where everything was. Made me remember the saying " A neat desk is the mark of a sick mind."

Makes me wonder what DaVinci's workbench looked like. :)

As I have been following this thread the question that keeps coming to my mind is how many hoods has John Moran made over the years; and are they all like the ones in this thread which for lack of a better description I would call designer hoods; and if not what percentage of the hoods he has made fall into the designer hood category?

First thank you for following the Thread. Great question, when The Archives celebrated John and his hoods, there was the largest collection of Moran hoods ever seen. I would say about 1/2 were his Dazzlers(designer hoods), the others were not as eloborate and many were undyed field hoods. Of the 51 I have, I think 10 are dazzlers and dazzler deluxe hoods. the others are what I described. John sells his hoods on e-bay, most now are two color or undyed field hoods. He isn't likely to make his dazzler hoods now unless someone orders one. I just had him make me a Dazzler Arab hood and should have it in a few weeks.
I asked him a few years ago how many he has made,, He only said "Ken really not that many",,, not sure he has kept track or really cares or what not that many mean.
More to come..

Here is a "Vintage" Hood I just bought from John. There is some neat history behind this hood, lots more to come. It was made in 1981 for a hybrid falcon that was used for a Major TV series for 4-5 years. The hood has two paintings on the inside which is a story all its own.
Anyone recognise the actor? And perhaps the TV series? More to come as I mentioned just a teaser....
