A passage red-tailed hawk has been spotted in the north Denver metro area with jesses and bells. This bird was first spotted by a wildlife photographer on November 24th and was not spotted again until today. This bird does not have a band on and I spoke with the CPW Special Licensing agent and she does not have any reports of any missing passage red-tailed hawks... so this bird could possibly be from out of state. We have falconers out trying to spot the bird and trap it. If you think this might be your bird, please send me a private message and hopefully we can get the bird back to its owner. http://

I was looking at that too. Looks a bit odd.

I'm surprised that bird can lift itself off the ground with all that junk on it's feet, nevermind fly something down. Must be the angle of the picture but everything on that bird looks to be over sized beyond good judgement.

My money is on an illegally taken bird My sponsor trapped one a month back that had 14 inch jesses on that were way over sized and a couple of the residents of the residential area it was hanging out in acted very fishy about it

That whole picture doesn't look right. Click on it and see where it takes you. I don't see any band, the leather isn't very old and looks thick. It's also dark leather indicating possibly some other type than kangaroo, it might be oiled too, don't know.

Not every state requires bands on wild caught redtails. AZ only requires them on Peregrines, Harris's, and Gos's.
That is definitely not roo hide, but I've known lots of falconers that don't use roo, Brian and Linda Kellogg don't. It's how the bells are attached that worry me...

Yeah who ever did that, needs to at least pay attention to the pictures in those books they bought.
Is anyone trying to trap it and cut it's furniture off?

That's just what I was thinking, a great idea, before it gets hung up on something.

Color doesn't mean anything. I use black roo all the time. I've got orange, blue, white, green, and brown downstairs right now. :D Been thinking about making some seriously CRAZY colored anklets and jesses just for something to do while I'm waiting for this weather to clear up so I can go fly!

If you guys are serious about trying to trap this bird its been seen twice at the waste water treatment plant off Huron north off 120th and in the surrounding area. Not sure where the pictures were taken but it was there on the 11th and the 14th. It may be a good place to start.
