I posted a picture of the female GHO sitting on eggs about a month ago. Went back today and took this picture. The chicks were really panting because of the direct sunlight even though it wasn't that hot.

Nice pic! I climbed a nest last weekend that had a couple GHOs in it a little older than those and they were really panting too. And snapping those little beaks like crazy! Of course Im sure they werent expecting my ugly mug to come poking up over their nest:eek:

Great pics Jim, thanks!

Chris, were you climbing up there just to check em out or are you wanting to pull one?

This nest is so low in the tree you don't have to climb. But, its miles from any traffic and no one in their right mind would be out there. That tells you something about me.

I was looking for something else actually. But Im known to climb trees for various random reasons! Im just full of spunk (among other things!);)

Here is an update on the owls. One of the chicks is gone, probably fell out of the nest and a predator got it. the other chick was about 10 feet away from the nest laying on the big tree branch. the mother was another 4 feet away from it and keeping watch. I didn't see them at first because I was still looking towards the nest. Took a couple pictures and headed out.

This pair fell out of their squirrel nest. Mom's got a bad habit of laying her eggs in old squirrel nests. They fell out on a rainy windy day. I put them into this basket and hauled them back near their nest branch. Mama fed them all along. After about two weeks I brought them down and constructed a dog proof fence. They ran around in this area for another couple of weeks until they fledged. I brought them chunks of rabbit to help the Mama owl. The whole village where I live was interested in how these owlets were doing.

I looked around for the other chick, but, could not find it. There are lots of coyotes and fox in this area so who knows what happened to it. Its a very remote area for people and I would have never found the nest if I wasn't flying the HH out there one day.
