I'm wanting a good photo of an American Kestrel on a kill. I am a wildlife artist (as well as a falconer). If you want to see my work go to my web site below and click on birds. Actually any really good picture of a bird on a kill would be considered. Of course, if you send me something, it's with the OK for me to use it. You can send them privately if you want. Thanks

Hey Kathie

I fly an american kestrel. Went out yesterday to get a pic for you, but I didn't like any of them. Leash in the way or something. Maybe this weekend.

Great, thanks, don't worry too much about things like a leash, I'll take them out when I do the artwork. I've not attempted such a picture before so hope I am up to it. All that detail [smilie=BangHead.gif]

I'll get more tomorrow - something from the side. My husband was taking the pics. She looks rough but this was #3.

Kim:
Great Picture. The coloring is so different. Do you know the age of her? Would you please post a close up picture of her just standing upright.

I can't remember how to make these pics smaller. Sorry. Here's my favorite

She ate as soon as we got home. My inexperience was a major problem. She had really messed up feathers and one broken primary so we are assuming its a juvy. My sponser says the band doesn't count at the end of the tail feathers. He has raised eyases that had the wide band when their feathers came in.

So, how is she different. We trapped another one but it was a hag for sure and there was a male watching us. I turned her loose. Didn't feel right. She was almost a goldish bronze. She was very pretty. Not rust colored like this bird.

Kim;
It is the rusty color that is different. I will have to look up in the bird banding manual on how to age them. I have only banded them in Mi. so they maybe different in other southern states. Thanks for the picturres. A starling is like catching a duck with a large falcon. Did you have any trouble with her biting you?

She doesn't bite now. But just warning nips. My husband took a short video of the trade off and she did great. Tried to upload it to photobucket and it didn't work.

Here is a pic of a 128.9 gram grackle she took - with a starling. That's how she got the missing feathers on her chest.

I use a leg to trade her off so the starling is legless. She bites that instead of me.

I would like more info on the age. Please share what you find out.

Kim:
Do you know any bird banders? They do not have to be raptor banders. I will gladly post the information but I do not know if I can put in a order so you will understand it. Let me know.
