My name's Amanda, I'm 18 and new to the sport. No sponsors and no heavy reading about the sport itself as of yet, there's just so much information I don't even know where to begin really. I've been mainly researching Red-Tail Hawks and Gyrfalcons.

Maybe it was growing up watching the Bald Eagles nesting outside of my grandfather's home or falling in love with a beautiful Gyr I saw at the Raptor Center.

Whatever the reason I've finally decided to start working towards a goal, and with college coming up, why not find something I want and make sure that I select the appropriate classes to advance into that field? Understanding, to some extent, the time commitments and the monetary commitments as well, I hope I'm ready to begin learning.

:P We're a special lot up North here.

Very very true. Yo don't learn much without being hands on, but when it comes to learning the ropes and getting input, only thing better than forums at times is live conversations. I like reading about other peoples' experiences and seeing what things might work and what ideas may not work so well. While everyone's an individual, you can always learn from the acts of others.

There's a couple threads that revolve around info for apprentices, but in case you haven't found it yet, in addition to your state site that you received above, www.themodernapprentice.com is an excellent site for a beginner.

Thank you! I can't say how much I appreciate that!

I live in the Cities but spend most of my time in the Northern 'Burbs and am looking at houses a little ways out, hopefully where I can find some land to help my interest.

Hi Amanda,
I love the handle 'Rising_Flames'! I once dreamed of starting a falconry business called 'Flameing Hearts Falconry'!! I am from the burbs but a long time gone, chaseing a long time dream of chaseing Gyrs and a long time later, gyrs chaseing grouse. I have been making it happen for 15 years, gone by now! I am starting a new imprint jerkin, my wife says that the last one was as slow to start as this bird, but I only remember how good he was.

If your flame burns true, and gyrs are what it is, there is no time to loose as there is really not much else that can challange a gyr enough to make for world class sport than Sharptails or Prairie Chickens and habitat is running short for both. It is hell to be born so late in the history of civilization(or overcivilization) as may now apply.

Best of fortune in your endevor!! Show us some BLUE flame!!

PM Sent!

I told this to Bill over PM, but may as well throw it out to the rest of you as well, I'm hoping to find a few to tag-a-long with as they go out for Passage RT's this season so I can see and learn first-hand before I go out and take my first RT hopefully next season. So if anyone has heard of or knows anyone who wouldn't mind please let me know.

It's been a while since I've been active on here - between getting engaged and moving things have been crazy and I haven't been able to focus on as much of the falconry as I've desired over the past few years. But with 2012, a new house and better funding I've pulled my books back out, refreshed all of my bookmarks and begun my studying once again!

And, since no thread is worth-while without pictures of some sort.
