I've read McElroy, McDermott, and I'm just getting into McMavrogordato. I haven't encountered much detail yet about the role of hunting dogs in the imprinting process. So I was wondering how and when successful austringers introduce their dogs to the young eyasses.

Tom it's never to early to start introducing them together. I would include pics ( old ones stored) but can't figure out how to .

Agree wholeheartedly. Immediately, so long as the dog isn't a danger to the bird.

OK, so no real risk of a dual imprint or anything like that.

Tom,

ASAP and just throw them in together, as long as the dog is trusted. As you can see, Molly plays subservient to birds and has always done well to not offend them.

If you start with a dog, keep at it and don't stop.. Make it an every day thing. It is well worth it. (dog)

Ahh nice. Thanks for the great pictures. My German Shorthair is excellent with the redtail but I'll assume a start from scratch with an eyas and monitor closely.

Our RT was perhaps a bit frustrated and still a bit new to the dog...she lept at the dog's ass three times the other day meaning to tell the dog she was not in the mood to have a beagle 2 feet from her. She never was aggressive toward the dog before. It is a chamber reared hawk.

Good thread Tom as I may be getting a chamber reared gos and will be introducing a dog to it and would be worried about the same thing (imprinting on the dog too much). Haven't read any imprinting books yet...but will be this winter. Good question.

Tom,
What are your plans for next year? Release Triumph and pull a gos?

Hey Tom,

I agree with what everyone has already told you, get them together from the first day keeping a close eye on the dog. In my experience the dogs seem to "know" the young raptor is off limits and something that they should protect, I guess its because the dog is taking cues from us...

Ricky and gruff were best friends and he would come in from hack and just mess around with him randomly. This is a pic of them...Ricky is 60 at hack then..

Nah, as long as Triumph is alive and in good health I'll hold on to her. She's a made hawk now and I can just go out and have fun with her 3 or 4 days a week...catch a squirrel or hare after flying the gos. Not that a gos won't be fun. But I know enough to know I'm diving in deep and a more relaxed bird might be a nice complement.
