Sent to everyone above this post! Anyone else, just post below this and I will send it to you. It is an artilce that was sent to me by Tasha, GregMik's better half on here. All the pages are in jpeg format, so you have to down load them and then enlarge them to be full page, at least, that is what I did. Some of the pages aren't in great focus. So if someone wants to clean it up, I will be glad to send it to them and they can email it back to me. LOL Ben, I hear you all on MAC's can do that kind of stuff! Can you?

No problem Kim, you were in the first email, but I sent it again! Not sure why you haven't gotten it. Let me know if it didn't work. I have a new email address and sent it from there, so if you have it so only emails in your contacts don't go to the spam, then I probably ended up in your spam folder.

Fred, thanks for sending me the article. I just read it and it gave me some motivation. Have any forum members used this method on a Peregrine falcon and will it work equally as well with a Peregrine? Bill I know you have hacked Peregrines is this a method you would use or if not what do you do. I'm particularly interested because I am thinking of taking a female Peregrine this year at about 27 days old.

Another useful book for this, primarily on imprinted Prairie Falcons, would be "The Hunting Falcon" by Bruce Haak. Much of his imprinting method came from the methods described by Charley Schwartz in that merlin article.

Pete, thanks, the Haak´s book is a very interesting lecture too about the imprinting of falcons and of its hunt.

Poor Fred. Probably this is something that NAFA should look into...posting certain very useful articles, from the past, online so that people can access them. I don't think it takes much to convert them to .pdf files.

Hi Bob,

It's called "Raising Imprint Merlins" by Charles Schwartz and Martha Browne, from Hawk Chalk Vol XVII, no. 1 April 1978. If you click on the link in post 66 of this thread you can read and save the article to your computer's hard drive.

PeteJ
04-14-2011, 12:31 PM
It is also pretty close to the description of how to raise imprint falcons in Bruce Haak's book "The Hunting Falcon".
FYI: One of the things that both the article and book do not do is to suggest keeping the eyas on ground food until you are absolutely sure they can always get enough to eat from whole carcasses. This is where most people make the biggest error in raising them when they misinterpret that the bird seems to be reducing its appetite when in fact it simply is not yet strong enough to regularly consume enough food to keep their manners in check. With some birds I have raised I was continuing to bring food along that was chopped (at least) when the birds were still being tame hacked....just to be able to top them off if they had been called in to feed on a carcass or baggie.

I sent it but may I suggest to others that if you aren't NAFA members, you should join and then you can purchase for only $10 the dvd of all the past NAFA Hawk Chalks and Journals from the NAFA store. The articles in all those past HC's and Journals is worth the $45 fee of joining NAFA, in my opinion.
