Hi,
now that I learnt to use photobucket I want to share with you some pictures of falconry birds I think you are not familiar with....Harpy eagle, Spizaetus tyrannus, Orange breasted falcon, Forest falcon, Buteo nitidus, etc. All are from breeders or with de-nesting permit for breeding purposes. The species I mention are not in order of appearance.

Sorry the Orange breasted pictures appear in the album about exotic longwings. The first picture (and some others) are of a Spizaetus tyrannus

What are the buteo nitidus being flown after? I read a few posts on a different site and it looked like they were doing rather well from what i could translate?

Hi,
all the B. nitidus have done well here in Mexico. Females are the perfect rabbit hawk, you wouldn´t believe the strength in their feet. i had experience with a passage male, caught several birdies and a quail (the only it saw). I believe the B. nitidus is the BEST alternative to a coopers hawk, although not as fast as the first, it is much faster than a HH or Roadside (and much less demanding in manning maintainance than an accipiter) . I am very interested in stories about the Red Shouldered hawk, anyone has tried one? Beebe says it is the accipiter of the buteos, so it must be a promising bird to fly.

I tried a male and a female, the male was lost before free flight due to a handling error and the female was chased off by a pack of crows her first free flight. They are very fast birds when in proper condition, although their feet are not very big they are strong. I think males would do very well on birds and females on cottontails as well as birds. I have heard of a female taking everything from grackles to CT's off the fist.

What is the common name of b. nitidus?

That uis interesting, I wonder why haven´t more falconers tried the Red Shoulder? Is it a more or less restricted species?
The nitidus common name is "Mexican goshawk" although not an acc., when it matures its breast plumage resembles somewhat like a gos.
I forgot to mention the Buteo nitidus was RECLASSIFIED as a diferrent genre. From some time now, it is now called "Asturina nitida" because it seems it is doesn´t share so many buteo characteristics although I still forget and use the old Buteo classification.

Ah ok, so b. nitidus is the grey hawk. I forgot i had a thread on my forum about it a while ago.
About RS's- They are limited to a few select states where they are legal to take, very few allow them i think less than 10

Noah, I would appreciate much if you could post every now and then anything you hear about regarding the use of RS in falconry.
BTW very interesting the web site of yours.
Best regards,
