Yup, Tanner and I were on our way back from hawking and stopped by Tom's and that's when the pics were taken. He no longer has the Bar-bat, it's back with its owner in CA.

Here's a few from my years in Japan:

A "grey" russian gos:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj41/Takasho/DSC01042.jpg

This one was considered "white":

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj41/Takasho/DSC00248.jpg

But I considered this one the truely "white" one:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj41/Takasho/DSC01304.jpg

I don't remember the ID on this one, martial eagle? African crowned?

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj41/Takasho/DSC01302.jpg

A shikra:

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj41/Takasho/DSC00245.jpg

A pair of "Kumataka" or mountain hawk-eagles owned by a VERY wealthy falconer (each bird costs over $20,000 and he had another male he said he was going to fly but as far as I know he never did...):

http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj41/Takasho/DSC01647.jpg

Come to think of it, I think every bird I just posted except the shikra was worth over $10K! And those goshawks were actually flown at game. The grey was crazy and tried to kill my Harris on numerous occasions.

I don't see any bells or transmitters in the photos.

Everything was tail mounted. Believe me, they weren't going to fly without transmitters! :D

(Sidenote: There's nothing on the Shikra because I don't think it was actually flown at game and eagles are considered "dangerous animals" and therefore illegal to free fly except in Hokkaido, the northern most part of Japan. Lots of pet keepers over there.)

Really Like this pic of my Gos with the Thorny Mesquite bush in the back ground. Jim Rogers took this pic and let me tell you I was very apprehensive in hunting this Kinda cover with my birds. All in all things turned out well for the birds but not so well for a few bunnies and jacks. I also kept wondering if he will just take off since we got him from a nest not so far from this area!!!!

Yes, still raising alot of quail. I'm not sure on availability, he was running far enough behind on orders for awhile to not take new clients. The flights I've seen have been pretty cool. She isn't as quick or manueverable as a smaller gos but has great top end speed when she gets going, can haul down a pheasant with a big headstart in 1/4-1/2 mile.

I've known there's been an accip around the yard for the last week, I hear the chickens get all worked up and my little pen of gamebirds are all hiding when I go out to see. The other day I caught a glimpse of large bird moving fast through the junipers. Then this afternoon my rooster was really unhappy about something, and as I was looking out the back door a big old female gos flys from an island of trees and lands somewhere near my pigeon loft. I snuck out with the camera and got these 3 shots off before she got out of there.

To my knowledge the bird is not sexed, but I am told hunt weight is 540ish. The picture might be a little deceptive. The gos kinda looks small comparatively speaking, Even though she's weighing about 1300grams right now.

Well it was his second day out after the molt. Seemed to take a bit more time to get him going this year compared to last season. Might have been the warm weather and we are starting a month earlier than Last year.

Well we went out in the morning and he chased a couple cts like no tomorrow and half hearted pursuits on some big jacks!!!! Then we came across this 3 to 4 pounder and he went all out. This young jack had a few tricks dodging till he took cover in a pinon tree/ big bush. Siing was up 15 ft on the pinon as I approached, the jack bolted to open ground and Siing nailed it!!!

We were enjoying our success and let him gorge but got a call from my boss to high tail it home!!!! Dish washer install person was on there way 1 hr early so I had to transfer him and let him gorge at home on the lawn. (hence the two pics)

OOOOh it feels so good to get my Hawkin on again!!!!

Sorry no action pics Maybe when Jim Rogers come up north he can get some good ones

We had an excellent hunt on Sunday. We were lucky to find a new pocket of dove in a terrific location while hunting jacks with a friend's redtail.

There are a few hundred dove hanging out in this corral that readily disperse into the surrounding grassland when bumped. The merlin started at maybe 200 ft. and as we were walking in for the flush, she spotted the dove moving around, stooped and piled in on one in heavy cover. It was pretty lame, so we were obligated to go for a double header. The dove had scattered into the open grasslannd at that point. I robbed her and she started hunting again, went up to maybe 400 ft this time and followed a long way while we tried to get another dove up. We did and she came in fast from a near vertical position and popped it really hard right in front of us. She did something odd and made a half circle before pulling in behind it for the tailchase. She ran it maybe 1/2 a mile up and out, but you could tell that she was not trying, just following (for fun?). She is robust and it was warm, so I guess she didn't feel like she really needed it at that point. She came back very high and I sprinted about 1/4 mile to a bush that I knew had to have a few in it. There was one dove and she came in from whatever pitch a merlin is at when they are a speck and she hit it with a decent blow. She pitched up high and the dove ran itself into the corral fence as she came back in on it. That dove was pretty frazzled! Anyway, good weather, good flight.

Yup. I don't remember if the bird got dirty or not. That was a very nice flight. That gyrkin put in another excellent flight at a flock a few days later. Let me back up, he flew great almost every flight. That day my peregrine was giving me some problems so instead of screwing everything up by trying to fly them I hooded her and gave him the flight. IT was getting late no sense in taking the fun out of it for everyone. The gyrkin took a tiny pitch and wacked a chicken. When he pitched up he chased off another one much to my shock because I could see the chicken he hit laying in the stubble. Anyway it woke up and led the pack out of sight. I swear that chicken was at least 100 feet above the rest of them. They don't give up their lives easily.

Those damned chickens. I saw that gyrkin grab one by the neck and it still shook it off<G> Incidentally the next chicken my falcon hit took one hell of a hit with a loud whop and flew away. Gotta love them.

Dave call me nuts, but I love hawking the salt marshes! Just really enjoy being out on them and hawking such a dynamic environment. But the slips here are GREAT! Its fun not having to worry about what time low tide is at or how the moon phase is affecting water levels. I can wake up, go kill my duck and be into work. My only gripe is that this fresh water seems to freeze at a bit warmer temperature than I am use to.

Hi Jeff,
She is a Female Peregrine. It is a rook she is on, as you can see from the growing primaries, it was early in the season. Just the thing she needed to develope her hunting skills.

Oh, we don't have rooks here. Do you practice the classic/historic ringing flights?

adam norrie
01-05-2011, 03:26 PM
Jeff,

you need really open land to get the classic ringing flight. My land will allow rooks/crows to climb quite high 400-500 feet. But as there is cover then the quarry will stoop into it. It's the flight at gulls that I want eventually. Not a problem if your land is a little enclosed, as long as there is'nt water around then the gull will stay in the air. These flights can go into the skies and travel a large distance.

We have a lot of crows locally and they are here all year long. I have thought that I would like to try flying them but am thinking that the gyrs are overkill and that flying crows would likely put the gyrs in too much unforseen danger, such as ranchers poisening them. One of these day a may have to trap a passage prairie and see if I can get some ringing flights on crows.

tony123abc

I have a feeling a gyr would make pretty quick work on a crow. My gyr/saker puts ravens on the ground pretty easily. She has never bound to one, and I think I am good with that, but when they get into her space she can chase em down pretty easy. But then again maybe they know she is not going to stomp em so they don't go all out.

Went out flying with a few friends today and took a couple pictures. Just Iphone pictures but still fun.

We walked all over the place trying to get a bunny flush for Joel (this place is normally loaded with bunnies) and finally put one out from under some equipment just above the parking lot.

One flush one kill. Cool little flight from the fist and Tony Pagoda had it all wrapped up.

One more of Joel giving us his mean face.

http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg42/chad13dnvr/CreekHawking002-1.jpg

And one of a freinds 50/50 peals anatum after she smoked this hen shoveler. Very nice flight. She waited for the duck to leave the creek and come under her, turned vertical and pulled in behind the duck at the last second and tumbled it. Like i said, very nice flight.

Tanner,

When I insert the picture into my replay it will not alow me to make it any larger. For some reason it is downsizing it. If you have any suggestions I will be happy to try again.

The musket flys about 137 grams and came from Lance's breeding project. I picked him up about 25 days old the end of August. It was the end of September before he really got going.

I wanted to fly one to see how different they are from our sharpies. The obvious thing they are larger than the tiercel sharpie. One thing I noticed with this bird is he will chase things a long way. Most of the tiercel sharpies I have flown break off after a short distance but this bird will not. In that respect he acts more like a goshawk.

He has taken sparrows up to quail although they are a handle for him. Personality wise, he does not appear that much more different than my tiercel sharpies. Given his age when I picked him up I did not try and hood him.

Since we got such a late start I wanted to try and moult him out early so he is currently under lights. Hopefuly he can be ready to go June or July.

Thanks for the description David. Very cool! Is the approx. August 1 hatch date of your bird representative of the "normal" spar hatch date , or is your bird possibly out of a second clutch? Please continue to pass along info and hawking accounts of this rarity!

My tiercel anatum on a hen gadwall yesterday. Sunday is the close of duck season, so we're trying to get out and hunt before it's too late. Shazam hit this one to the ground, I think just clipping her wing, she got right back up and was hightailing out of there and Shazam took her in long pumping stoop after his throw up.

I have seen a bazillion RT pics and a bazillion RT alive in the field. They never get old or boring. A RT is just plain old good looking. Always will be. Nice pics.

Ray turner took this pic on a recent visit, everyone taking a break after a hard chase that the hare won. The chase started over on the hilltops in the distance.

This was Thursday of last week. This jack was at full speed by the time I took this picture. It suddenly put on the brakes skidding to a full stop with the HH going right over its head. Then the jack did a 180 turn and out ran the HH. Great jack chase.

Paul and Pete,
All this talk of redheads reminds me of a quote by those Kiwi guys that did a little program called "Flight of the Concords".....

One of my favorites;
"Blondes not bombs, redheads not warheads, brunettes not fighter jets."

Sounds good to me.

Not great shots, but here is something that is visiting my goldfish pond the last couple of days. For where I live, this is very unusual.
