Exposed Bone on Toe - I have been talking with a falconer who claims his bird ate the scales and flesh from the knuckle all the way to the top of the talon. The entire bone is exposed and the tendon appears to be intact. I have reviewed the phone pics and we have discussed several options. I offered to give him a rehabilitator’s info, he stated that he has talked with another falconer and they have decided to apply betadine to the open wound and to leave the bone and tendon exposed. They will allow the bird to continue training while hoping that the toe will mend or fall off. I strongly disagree and have asked that they reconsider: they will proceed with the other falconer’s suggestion. Your Valuable Input – I ask for your fact based solution to fix this toe in hopes that others will gain knowledge. I will not share the bird species, name or location of these falconers, nor am I asking for opinions, just a solution for the betterment of the birds we care for. Dennis H.
