My dog Jet, wearing a cone of shame, with a wooden hand pointing to the empty space in his head.
Awesome pictures

This is another first time hybrid - a two day old merlin x barbary produced from my jack Richardson's and PeteJ's female barbary. Pete made these the "other way around" (female merlin) a few years back. Should be a rocket.

Good genetic combination, very interesting bird. Would like to fly one. But given the choice I would opt for a RNS x Richardsoni. Should make a wonderful pale bird.
I hope to read something about this cross here on the forum in the future.

The merlin x barbary has a sibling. This one was wrong-way-around in the egg at pip. Pete watched it for a day or so and made the call on when to help it out. He got it out last night and all was well - yolk sack retracted and blood vessels dried. The chick is not out of the woods yet, a little dehydrated, but still kicking this morning.

As long as we are showing baby pictures, this is my new team member, just 18 days old, male 7/8 Gyr X Saker, daddy was a white Jerkin. I know you can't tell much at this age. Breeder was Mike Erickson.
Nice Forrest! Is his name Ivory?
Forrest, I was thinking about calling to see how the bird hunt was going, now I know. It's gonna be a fun summer peacee
You know how it goes the kids want to name him, I don't care as long as it's not to far gone. So far nothing sounds good.
Well done! Assisted hatches are very touchy procededures. Patience, patience. One mistake and it's over, and in most cases (like a case like this) you are fixing what what went wrong in nature.
I've helped a few along and it always scares the living crap out of me. And I haven't always succeeded. It's not for the faint of heart. It fascinates me.
I am wishing you all the best. That chick wouldn't be here at all without you. Pipping outside the aircell.frus)
Here he is @ 22 days. He'll be heading over to Phx today as he'll be now in the hands of Jim Bryant who is on here from time to time. Perhaps he'll keep us updated on his progress.
It was a rough go the first week or so as the bird was quite weak due to malpositioning in the egg and also from running on the drier side during incubation. But he made it through with a lot of attention. Currently he's weighing in @ 255 grams as of yesterday morning, starting to stand and walk a little, some wing waving (could hardly call it flapping at this point). I'm not sure what he'll look like as he progresses as this cross hasn't been done this way in our country between these two species (merlin INTO barbary), although I have made them the other way. I am curious to see the difference between the two ways of producing them whether it will effect what they eventually fly like. Since we do have the ability to make them both ways, it may end up that one way is preferable to another for certain reasons.
Anyway, I hope that Jim will be well strapped in because the ones I made the other way a decade ago were very very hot and you really needed to keep on top of them. We'll see how it goes I guess?!
Here's couple of pics.

Oops, Jim Bryan (no 't').
He looks great Pete!
Jim sends pics every day or so and when it gets a bunch of the down off I'll post a few, but right now its still a big fluff ball. But, its weight has been increasing still, probably because its putting on breast muscle now, and was weighing in at 329 this morning before feeding. This weight might have been with some food still in from overnight or perhaps a large pellet as it was 315 yesterday I think. Not that it couldn't put on that much at this point, but I'm thinking it should be in smaller increments. When I made this cross the opposite way before, the tiercels were pretty much topping out at 265 or so, before dropping back to 220 to start and then building back up to the 265 range when really fit and flying hard. I did assume this hybrid would go bigger a bit because the mother was the larger bird this time, but I was unsure how much change there would be and you are just sort of guessing until you see how they turn out.
Anyway, here's a pic that's recent (the last couple of days). Jim was complaining that the birds' toes were getting 'almost too long'. Is there anyone local to Jim that can give him a smack in the back of the head for us all?LOL

Jim is keeping me abreast of this lil guys' status. Currently as of this morning 316 grams empty. He took this pic last night just on a glove he had laying around (he made sure I understood that part LOL). Surprising to me that it looks so similar to the Barbary X Merlin crosses I made before. I would have thought that the Barbary being the mother this time would have made more of a impact, but apparently it seems to have just made it a bit bigger, slower to grow, but that's about it from what I can see so far.

Nice feet on that bad boy.
My pup and her toy.
Two flights of my friend's anatum this weekend on ducks. The audio on the first hit is pretty nice if you turn it up.

My son, Derek, took this shot. I think he's got an artistic eye.
Thanks guys, I got some more footage I'll go through and see what's there. John, filming the flights is what I have to do since you never show up anymore....!
Hopefully your Friday is better than this guys.
