That bird was Chad Cyrus' last falcon, taken on by Brian in her brown year when Chad died. She certainly is a powerful, high-energy falcon. I watched her work some huge-water duck slips in Montana last fall and she didn't dissapoint!

Holy s***!! Awesome stoop. Makes me want to move to the western part of our state and fly a longwing.

Western Part of the state? I thought much, if not most of South Dakota was good longwing country? I have hawked western and as far east as Murdo and trapped east river and didn't see any bad longwing country. I can't think of anywhere where i have seen more longwing quarry, including Prairie Chickens, Sharptails, many Pheasants, Ducks, Huns. I think that Sage Grouse closed to hunting a few years back. What is it like where you are?

Here in the southeast corner of the state there is very poor pheasant populations and the few pockets that have them are pay per hunt, public walkin areas or saved for family/friends. I've tried flying a longwing a few times and always come to the realization that it's pretty futile. Aggressive farming due to ethonal and high corn prices make for dwindling habitat. I'm right along the Missouri River too so duck populations tend to be in nonhawkable settings. I spend a lot of time out in the countryside and sometimes go many days and even weeks without a pheasant sighting. If one is willing to to drive around 100 miles in a more westerly and northen direction there would be some good longwing country.

I might add we have no chickens, grouse, and there used to be a few covies of huns but haven't seen any for years. I do the Adubon annual Christmas bird count and this year there were no hun or quail sightings in our county.

Tom Smith, Sometimes, someone unexpected comes into your life out of nowhere, makes your heart race, and changes you forever. We call those people cops.
Good capture nonetheless Tom. It is not often that these two species can be included in the same frame based on the preferred habitats of each.

It's all just too Zen for me.

Tom, I'm with Pete nice pic. when do goshawks breed in Idaho? if it's one of a pair you have less pigeons.

I was doing some bush hogging today and the resident pair of rts showed up with the kids in tow. In the first picture I had made two passes on each side of the strip of grass and the male came stooping behind the tractor, slamming into the strip. I turned around and drove right next to him and he never flinched. I was amazed at his nerve. Tractor running and bush hog churning, never phased him, 4 ft away! Got to love a rt!

I've had red tails, Swainsons, Feruginous, Marsh hawks and kestrels follow my tractor when I am cutting hay and baling. I have seen them all make kills cokes to the tractor as if I'm not there. It's not like the equipment is quiet or anything. I had a haggard Swainsons catch a Vesper sparrow out of the air and go to ground right in front of the tractor. I had to stop as he was eating it as I got up to him. You can't get that close in a truck! I guess they don't see the tractor as anything less than a lunch wagon.

Wow Morris that looks different.

Why are all your birds "famous"?
Ray Gilbertson-Montana
Here's Mikie. He's a cross between a kestral falcon and a red-tailed hawk. And I think some of the neighbors parrot. He doesn't seem to want to eat my pigeons. He's more into catch breed and release. I should have the badest flock of pigeons in the county by the end of the summer.
