Someone needs to pave over all that desert and build a bunch of cracker box houses and strip malls before you become completely corrupted and of absolutely no use to anyone but yourself and your falcon.

There used to be an old saying: "Give a boy a gun and a dog and ruin him for life."

I think we can paraphrase it: "Give Falconboy a bird and some sagebrush...." [smilie=eusa_clap.gif]

    I love the desert too.

Hey, it's a start. It's all up from here on out. Lizards and Jacks are both desert animals after all. [smilie=eusa_think.gif]

Flew goose for approx 3hrs today and he wasn't quite himself. Flew strong but wandered more than normal. Did some slope soaring and some high waiting on in the wind, only one rabbit flushed and he was too far out of position for it. *waiting for friday*

He just didn't fly with as much gusto as usual, other than the lizard i didn't feed him much last night so i think it was a lack of energy.

Flew today but goose was underweight and flew like a pile of crap, think that was the problem yesterday as well since i didn't weigh him yesterday\

Today was a good day. Found a lone shoveler on a pond at my friend quail lease and put goose up, who quickly climbed to 500ft. I flashed the lure to get him overhead and flushed... and he stooped like a peregrine and missed by about 6inches when the duck dumped back into the pond. After that i put him back up for a group of 4 ducks but he just goofed off. We are getting there

    It sounds good, Noah.

The stair stepping that you described in the waiting on thread is just a phase that some young birds go through when they are learning to stoop. The sight of the ground coming up that fast can be pretty scary and the tendency is to put on the brakes. My Redtail did it when she first started stooping out of thermals, but it didn't take her long to get used to the speed.

I remember a falconer telling me, with an air of great authority, that Prairie Falcons always stoop in a hesitant, stair step fashion and are, therefore, always inferior to a Peregrine. I just smiled, remembering the morning of that same day when I had watched my Prairie come down from somewhere up out of sight in a vertical, full tuck, sizzling stoop that ended with a duck being dead when it hit the ground.

By the way, for the last two days, I haven't found a duck to fly my birds at so maybe they're headed down to see Goose. [smilie=icon_thumright.gif]

Sounds good and thanks for the info. I'm sorry you're not seeing as many ducks, hopefully you will start seeing more soon!

    **************

SWNM meet started today and i got to put goose up with about 12 people. Goose went up to 250-300ft and held right over the pond. There were a lot of crows/blackbirds and i think that distracted him b/c he didn't chase the 4 ducks when they scooted off. Perhaps tomorrow he will slam one!

Flew goose over two ponds today, didn't pay any attention to the ducks. Tossed a pigeon and he put a great chase and took it out of the air. I'm working on bringing his weight back up as well

Today was interesting. Went looking for ducks but didn't see any, but of course they were there after we cropped goose up LOL!

Anyway we flew him on a pigeon i had, and we had about 20-25mph constant winds i think. Anyway it was his best flight to date. I've brought his weight up to 27.5ish and he flies much better. He scared me today, he caught the pigeon about 1/2mile away and we saw 2 RT's stoop straight down onto him. Luckily they just robbed him and we found him eating a pigeon leg, but i thought he was dead and was scared for sure.

Here is a vid of today's flight, and for the record i jumped the gun throwing the pigeon

All right Goose - he got something. WTG Noah. I know it's not what you were wanting but YEAH. What about the video??? Don't tell me you forgot?? I bet tooo much swearing to post [smilie=smileys13.gif] . Was he chasing a jack and caught a pheasant. Many people would be very happy with with a pheasant.

Sounds like a blast - yes - FUN FUN

The pheasants were flight conditioned baggies, not wild. Unfortunatly my camera broke on day 4, and i didn't get any vid of goose while we were there that was worth a shit. We tried for a pheasent flight, but he went so fast you couldn't see the bird. No more vids or pics for a while, cameras toast!

To be honest i am getting frustrated. I just don't have good enough game numbers within a reasonable distance for this little guy.

I should have gotten a goshawk [smilie=BangHead.gif] I love flying him, but taking game is a hell of a lot more fun than watching him go to 400+ft but not stoop, or having the ducks slip off too early, or one of the other 1000000 things that can go wrong when longwinging.

I commend you for sticking with it, Noah. You've hung in there longer, and done a lot better job than I could have, under those circumstances.

    Our best hunt to date!

This morning got off to a bad start, i set my alarm, but forgot to turn it on! So i woke up 10min before i was supposed to meet raptrlvr to go hawking. About 30min later [i'm glad he's patient...] i finally met him and we got off to go hawking. We went to my jack and quail field, mainly with the intention of just letting goose stretch his wings for a few hours, but by golly he put on his performance to date!

First he got up to his pitch of 250-300 very quickly, probably within 90sec-2min, and he kept staring intently at the ground about 150yrds away and he put in a hard stoop. I ran over and found a covey of gambels quail running around, so when he got back to a decent pitch 50-75ft i flushed again and the chase was on! He stooped and barely missed one [it dodged he had feet out and everything] and then he tail chased it a good 200-300yrds until it put into cover. When he came back we tried to find the rest of the covey but to no avail, so 10-15min later i called him down and did a few stoops to the lure.

With a bit of food in his crop, up he goes again to about 150ft and we started across the other side of the two track. I flushed a jack and so i yell HO HO HO and just when i think he is ignoring the jack, WHAM full blown stoop! The jack stopped under a yucca and goose put in another very strong stoop then came back overhead as the jack ran off while he was regaining his pitch from the stoop. After that i flushed another jack but he was way out of position over the windmill and kept circling there, so we figured the quail were there. We saw him stoop again, so we started walking since he did not come back up [about 400yrds away].

When we got there he was on a post, so i started walking towards him and he took off again taking a shallow 75ft or so pitch. We started walking and found a quail covey, so i yelled and he came back overhead and i flushed, and out came quail a CT and a jack! Goose immediatly put in hard on the CT and grabbed it about 50ft in front of us, but we thought he missed [he crashed brush after it] and then we heard the squeal! We both start running and he lost the rabbit when we were about 20ft away....next time he won't let go!

After that we put him back up again and again found the quail covey, thanks to his circling overhead of them So we flushed again and he barely missed, We then hooked up goose and went home.

So goose flew awesome today! By far our best hunting day yet, with some awesome stoops, tailchases, binding to a CT, and stooping a jack.

Ill post pics when they are emailed to me
