Default Prairie falcons in the flight field

I'm actually happier that the Prairies aren't in there so much now as Prairies aren't nice. Peregrines have come in in the past and only once were they a problem and they were very young ones who I think were sort of playing really hard with my smaller bird. Anatums just seem like that care that much about anything smaller, but if its large or larger than them they can get pretty serious I imagine.
    Pete,
I have the same issues here when prairie falcons winter in our valley. They nest in the Central and Eastern portion of Oregon and the nesting areas are over the main mountain range in our state. The Cascade Mountains. The nearest nests are perhaps 100 miles east of here, yet prairie falcons in late summer somehow find their way into our wet forested valley. Trying to fly your falcon in a field, that they have staked out as their hunting territory, can be a real problem. For a falcon my size brings real danger to my bird. The prairie can easily injure or kill your bird. Yet in the same fields when peregrines or gyrfalcons winter in these fields, I usually never have a problem with them going after my falcon.

Just a random photo of my sponsor's buddy's HH during a morning hunt in Bakersfield, CA during the 2013 field meet.

I know CA is more wide open and there is a lot less to get hung up on but if I flew my HH with mews jesses like that, she would be hung up in the brush or in a tree in a minute!

Well, I can only speak for the time I watched them hunting but they luckily had no issues. I'd prefer something with less of a profile myself.

Next season I'll try some of the paracord jesses like the ones you made. I made 'em last year, but didn't ever get around to using them.

I thought this was a cool picture of Jager from earlier today. Giving the camera his best "death stare".

I thought I'd share one of my favourite photo's.

Looking out of the window I can see Dancer on her block, waiting for the start of the new season. For the moment, I'm more excited than she is. Not long now!

    Best wishes,

    Tony.

Ryan and Tony, beautiful birds and very sharp pics. Neat camera angle on the white gos, Ryan. Season is upon us. We have been getting some unseasonably cool temps here. It sure feels like it is time to get started.

Thanks Ross, although I can't take credit for the photography I'm afraid.

Here's another couple of the same falcon, by the same photographer friend.

    Best wishes,

    Tony.

Almost hawking time indeed, nice photos guys! Here are a few photos of Jim Bryan's merlin x barbary in his new suit. Arizona got record rainfall this year and I cant help but think that Jim and his bird are in for a great season.

Tony, I love the clarity of the bird and take with the bluriness of the rest. Awesome picture!

Tanner that bird is sweet looking. I'm going to have to try to meet Jim this year.

    Glad you like it.

Strangely, and I know it's not a picture that will excite others, but I love the one taken just 10 seconds earlier.

    Best wishes,

    Tony.

    Hi David,

it all looks a bit enclosed in those photographs, but I'm pretty fortunate with the combination of lots of open ground and lots of wild game.
Fingers crossed for the new season.

    Best wishes,

    Tony.

I've had similar setups in western Nd the few years we went out there. Small drainage sloughs surrounded by cut pasture let you know that the point would be productive and the bird would hold long enough for the falcon to gain pitch. Still some would be seen slithering along the bar ground like snakes to the next patch of cover great distances away.
I hope to get back to some of those this season. Best of luck this year Tony. I'd love to see some more photos of your red grouse hawking. What a beautiful quarry and place.

Hi Matt, I did not think he was going to go this low, but this is where he is responding properly to the lure. Yes, doves will be on the menu.
